Hi I am new to caravanning and have a question about the lighting in my 1994 Lunar Clubman. The answer might be obvious but I am scratching my head.

Why do only half of the lights in the van work? Are there 2 seperate lighting circuits in caravans? Is it because my battery is not sufficiently charged?

Hi you dont say which ones are working ie front of back just one side?

I presume you have checked the obvious bulbs and fuses?

They are normally on a type of circuit so could be a broken wire etc.

Hello Simon,

Yes there are two lighting circuits in most caravans. One is a 12V circuit and the other is 230 mains. Obviously the 230V light will only work when mains is connected.

Hi Mickey

I have checked the bulbs and fuses, the lights that i cannot get working are 2 flourescent lights on the ceiling.

Do you know if there is a curcuit for battery use and a curcuit for when on mains.

Thanks for your help.

I know it might sound a stupid question but is there a switch to swap over from 12v to mains, at the moment I have just been plugging my extension lead into the site mains and I could still be on a 12v setting in my van.

i have also been reading some other forum topics, Do all caravans have a battery charger switch?

I take it they are not the rocker switch type?

I think you will have to try and trace the cable back to the 12v unit.

I take it the ones that work are the 12v spot ones?Could be 2 circuits and you need to find the rocker switch or if its from the same as the other lights find out why you have no power.

Hopefully some else will have a similar van or speak to Lunar for a wiring diagram

Hi Simon

There are 2 lighting circuits in your caravan. One will be 12v and the other will be 230v and I'd say that the fluorescent lights would be on the mains 230v. They will have a separate switch and you need to turn on the mains electricity in your caravan for them to work after you have connected your electric hook up (ehu) lead.

If the sockets work the light should also work

You might have two 12v circuits, i doo. One switch for the rear of the van, one for the front. In addition a seperate switch for the A frame light. A part from the A frame light, all the lights also have a local switch.

So you problem may be simply a switch in the off position?

I would also expect two lights in the bay window area to be on 240 volt. Remove a bulb and check the voltage.

Note my van only has one flourescent fitting , this is run off the 12 volt circuit.
