Lights in the awning?

we have just purchased our first awning, went away at easter and thought the light above the door on van would be ample.

We now know that we need extra lighting

1 240V or 12 v

2 how do we fix to poles without rubbing on roof fabric causing holes?

thinking of buying 12 volt domsetic kit like the recessed bath room ceiling sets with transformer.

any one got a better idea.

Not pretty but very effective I use an ordinary inspection lamp (like the sort for working on the car) it has a 'clip' of course which attaches to the poles without any problem.

I wouldn't bother with that. Our van has an external electrical socket. We have a table in the awning and put a table lamp on it. Far nicer than an inspection lamp (sorry Plotts) and such.

If you don't have an external socket, you could run an extension cable from inside the caravan like we used to before we got our current van.

You could try a fluorescent awning light obtainable for most camping accessory stores.

Hi , we to have a 240v external socket and use white rope lights in our awning we just hang them around the roof poles.

Hi Robert. Isabella do a plastic holder approx 24 inches long which fits over the awning roof poles. There is a channel along the side of this to carry an electric cable and lamp holder. Not very expensive.

I use a 12v tube light, i think its sold as an inpection lamp for cars i simply use cable-ties to attach it to an awning pole then cut them off at packing up time, i run the cable trough the window to a cigar-lighter type socket in the caravan.

Be careful with 12V down lighters the bulbs get HOT, unless you buy LED ones that is!

Hi Rob,

We use rope light in our awning we hang them off the poles using string and they give off a good amount of light.

I don't think they use that much power either.

We use a 240V light, cable tied to the middle awning pole its cord and then through a suction stick on hook on the side of the caravan. Lamp plugs in to our external 240V socket. The lamp is on a normal hanging light fitting and has a shade and is also on a dimmer switch.

Final point it is fitted with a special yellow bulb (Only seen these for sale in South of France). This type of bulb does not attract insects. Works very well particularly being able to dim the light.

We unplug it in heavy storms.
