HI THERE PEEPS!!!We are toying with the idea of changing our 1997 Compass Rallye for a newer model with a fixed bed. Whilst we were in Spain last year we saw a lovely van next door belonging to a very helpful German family. It was a Lord Munsterland single axle but it looked longer than a conventional one.The guy that owned it was able to stand on the roof to clean it and he was not a slight build!!!Has anyone owned or owns one of these vans and apart from the obvious (door on t"other side) are there any downsides to buying one? I look forward to reading any and all comments!!!

THANX 4 LOOKING!

Hi Tc

You need to be aware of towing law if you are considering using a continental caravan in the UK

There are restrictions on the size and weight of caravans which are legally enforceable besides taking into account what your towcar is capable of towing.

I copied a part of the towing law from the Homepage of this website:

Maximum sizes for towing

Towing vehicle under 3500kg GVW

Length (excluding the coupling and drawbar)

7.0 metres

Maximum width

2.3 metres

Towing vehicle over 3500kg GVW

Length (excluding the coupling and drawbar)

12 metres if at least 4 wheels

Maximum width

2.55 metres

Length of towing vehicle & trailer combined

18 metres

Maximum overhang of load from rear of trailer

3.05 metres

I strongly recommend that you have a look at the information in the helpline of the Practical Caravan website:

Thank you so much for your input. We were aware that we could not tow over a certain width but the information that Parkey has given is very comprehensive.

We will look at the model that Alan has.We tow with a Jeep 2.7 crd.The twin axle models would not be on our list as we keep our van in a special space at home so we need a single axle.We will keep searching.Mind you we are away lots of the time now we are retired so it will probably be a winter night project on my laptop!!!

kindest regards

Just a note on the side:

LMC is the same manufacturer that builds caravans for Geist.

WE have looked at German vans as they are so well built, and we like the style. Never found one we could afford- have you seen the price of new Hymers? What did surprise us though is the residual price of them. They seem to lose a lot of money in depreciation. Anyone got any evidence one way or the other?

Slightly wrong Steve.

As you may remember, I have a Burstner caravan on a single axle that is 7.5mtrs long overall length,2 .29mtrs wide, 1700kgs max totally legal

It would have to be an exceptional van to make me buy British again

We also had noticed that they seem to be a really good second hand deal for the quality of them.I am a bit concerned about the fact that some of them do not have ovens in them and is that due to some safety regulations. The other downside is the fact that people assume that only the traveller fraternity use them and we have heard they are reluctant to allow them on sites for this reason. The attraction for us is the build quality as we are on a fixed income now and when we buy another van we want to be as sure as we can that it will last us for the foreseeable future. If we came into some money we would like a Compass Rallye 634.I THINK!!!!!

HEY HO!!!

We have looked at Hobby caravans - they do some smaller ones which would be legal in the UK. They are very popular abroad and the Dutch seem to like them. However, we are not yet in the market for a new van.

I am a bit concerned about the fact that some of them do not have ovens in them and is that due to some safety regulations.

German caravans dont have large ovens because in Europe they have far better weather than here and so enjoy the outdoor life, insomutch that most of them only use the van to sleep in.

We bought our Burstner at the Oct 06 show at the NEC and asked to change the small oven for a larger one and also for a micro wave oven
