I bought one of these but could not postion the leveller as shown in the instructions, only about 1inch of the plates were against the tyre. I returned it to the dealer.

I saw one in a caravan showroom today, the salesmen said he raises his van with a caravan jack before placing leveller under the wheel. This is not mentioned in the instructions.

Help please and Thanks

Hi, I have the bulldog equivelant and have sometimes had problems getting the thing under the wheels. I usually find that placing it as far under the wheels as possible and then kicking it in to place works. Alternatively if you're on gravel clear some of the gravel away to lower the body of the leveller. I carry a trolley jack in my boot and would consider using it to jack the van if all else failed - a bit of a ball ache I know but compared to driving up and down levelling chocks all day I'd take that option every time.

Obviously not many in use

Asked at Caravan shop. 1 said they use a jack to lift up the van. Makes the leveller an exspensive piece of wood!!

Another said use your ramps and drive into it.

Not easy if on your own

Thanks

Mike, since I posted I've been away again and ended up jacking the van to get the leveller under. What I noticed this time is if you have to jack up any more than 2-3 inches then the handle used to put the steadies down that you use with these levellers starts rubbing against the van and eventually you can't turn it a full turn because of the the angle involved at the business end of the handle. Have you found this?

Saw one of these on the CC Normanhurst site last week and first impressions was what a great piece of kit. Reading your posts I'm not so sure now. I thought the idea was that you drive onto the device and just jack it up to the desired height. Clearly this is not the case.

I did once consider driving on to the leveller but reckoned the tyre wall could be damaged because of getting the wheel over the plates that sit against the tyre. If you do consider getting one don't buy new. I got mine from the classified section of the Caravan Club web site for

Nick, I have a Bulldog leveller too and have found it to be a very useful product. Something we have found particularly helpful are the plastic strips placed under wheels to give you grip. I'm not sure what they are called but the ones I have are about 3' long, yellow and are very light and strong. When we reverse on to a pitch we stop a foot or two short of the ideal position and then place these behind the caravan wheels and reverse on to them. What they give you is a very smooth surface for your leveller to be applied and on grass, they also prevent the leveller from sinking slightly in the ground. Best Wishes, George T.

Mike / All,

We have one of these. it is not the easiest piece of kit in the world to use - 1450kg of 'van (well half of that) takes a bit of lifting with the thread and a ratchet spanner but it does a good job.

I've never had any difficulty getting it to sit under the wheel and sitting properly, and have never had to drive onto it, or use a jack, or another piece of wood.

I bought it in the first place to assist with levelling the 'van and using the Alko wheel clamp at the same time. Don't use it all the time, but it is perfectly fine when we do.

I had a similar one a few years ago and had nut welded in place of the winding handle so that I could use the 1/2 drive socket ratchet .

I got rid of it becaus I didn't like the tyre distortion

George if you reverse onto a pitch without then drawing forward the reverse mechanism will affect the brake.

I would have thought that it would be safer from a breaking point of view on sloping pitches to draw forward on the strips of plastic.

Hi George T, thanks for the advice, I'll give that a try next time. Have you ever had cause to wind the leveller up to the maximum height or near to it and if so have you found that the thread bit starts turning in towards the caravan at all making it hard to access with the tool?

Hi Everyone

This is Milenco

We do not understand some of these postings in regard to the Lockloy Leveller.

We believe some of these comments may relate to a competitors product.

The Lockloy leveller is the top selling mechanical leveller for caravans. Many, many thousands have been sold in both Holland and the UK.

To use it you only have to position the Caravan then simply slide it under the wheel to be raised. Turn the screw to lift the Caravan.

The Screw Jack mechanism on the Lockloy Product has a universal joint so it can be angled to make turning easier and of course miss the side of the van being raised.

We have recently further improved the leveller so that it is now even easier to turn and lift the Caravan. The parts to upgrade the previous versions are also available to order at all Milenco stockists.

Nigel

I started this subject

The lockloy leveller did not go either side of my tyre.

The diagram shows from memory the leveller in position about 2 inches away from the front of the tyre. I think mine are std tyres but I could only get it about 2 inches either side of the tyre, not I would have thought enough to lift up the van.

when asking at other caravan dealers how to use I added the answers at the time. I must admit to a certain amount of disappointment particularly as I often pitch up on my own.

I still have the credit note from the dealer that I returned it to, who had no answer. My van is Lunar Quaser 420

Over to you.
