Long Vehicle Sticker

I'm with Gafferbill. I've seen a Fiat Punto try and pass a 100+ foot multi wheeler wide reactor load with escorts.

Signs will not help you!

I think these are not illegal and you can have stickers as big as you want. I also had full-body customized vehicle wraps on my old caravan and it added much needed style to my vehicle. Loved the new look of it!

I detect SPAM..... 7 year old topic, 1st poster with a commercial link....

Edit by paws: I reckon Parksy or Damian must have beaten me to it as the post has now gone!

I have an 8ft wide 25ft long caravan and I tow with a Renault traffic van.
a couple of times I’ve had people overtake and I can tell they have misjudged the length of my van/caravan combination.
So today I put a sticker on that says long vehicle.
If it stops just one halfwit from taking the chance it could save his life and more importantly myself, my wife and any innocent drivers heading in the opposite direction.
Anyone who gets uptight about a sticker really needs to get a life!

I don’t think anyone has got uptight as the last post was March 2017 🤫 .But if it aids your safety and that of others I don’t see a problem. It’s your caravan and car after all.

I know that markers are mandatory for commercial vehicles, and are required for motorhomes and car/caravan combinations over 12m in Spain and France.
There is no specific information regarding the UK, which does not surprise me.

However, I agree with what you have done on a safety perspective and it does draw the attention of following drivers to a situation which they do not appreciate just how long a car/van combination is.

I think the idea of warning drivers you have a long vehicle is good, but I do have reservations about simply saying "long Vehicle". How long is a long vehicle? If every caravanner were to use them then long could mean anything between 8m to 16m.

It would make better sense to make up a marker that says how long your outfit actually is to the nearest 0.5m.

The whole point is that you have alerted following drivers of a potential hazard, not give them chapter and verse of exactly what it is !

We have the markers permanently attached to our caravan.

......as a final note if caravaners drove to correct speed limits on all roads an conditions the need for other road users to overtaking us would not be there , i therefor agree with tom the lenght shown of a towed unit would be a great safety addition.
What would you consider to be 'the correct speed limit'?
Any displayed speed limit on any road is an upper limit, not a target to be reached at all costs.
Responsible drivers, whether they are towing a caravan or not, drive according to the road conditions at the time.
That includes the avoidance of attempted reckless overtaking manoeuvres, long vehicle stickers or no.
Dangerous situations can arise at any time on the roads, overtaking bicycles can be dangerous if the road conditions are not taken into consideration.
The only caravans that I've seen displaying long vehicle stickers have belonged to showmen with travelling funfairs.
Each to their own, I've seen caravans with transfer pictures of Apache chiefs, bucking broncos or Lancaster bombers on the back, so if people with long vehicle stickers want to be mistaken for circus performers or tattoed funfair waltzer operatives, that's up to them

Goods vehicles for which the long vehicle sign is mandatory don't show their length, why should caravans? The sign just draws attention to the fact that the vehicle isn't short, it's up to other drivers to assess the length and act appropriately.

Which comes back to how long is "long". Its something you cant accurately assess when you stuck behind such a vehicle.

.........modern long vehicle signs now no longer have any letters or numbers written on them.
They are simply a red border with a yellow centre and are reflective.
The size and type of vehicle for which they are mandatory, is laid down in UK contruction and use legislation.

Caravans and all UK trailers must display 2 red reflective triangles to the rear to convey to following drivers that the vehicle is longer.
This bit of vehicle signage and its meaning is lost on many drivers today.
Even caravan manufacturers don't help by loosing the red triangles in circular discs!

Isn't the Lancaster bomber sticker to commerate those that fought and died in WW2

On a police driving course two things that I recall.

“ if you think you can overtake….. don’t”

“ when overtaking long vehicles like tractor trailer units change up a gear before you start to pass the back end of the trailer “
