Loo Roll

Hi folks, A quick question about loo roll. We have spoken to several people about what type to use, some say you have to use Thetfords own brand but others have said it doesn't matter. As this is our first van and we are having our first outing next week, a litttle advise would be a great help.

We were advised years ago on this forum not to waste money buying the expensive toilet rolls from caravan & camping shops and to get the very cheapest ones from supermarkets, which break down just as easily.
A lot of caravanners just use their on board loo for the middle of the night and use the site toilet (if they've got one) at other times. I know some CL's don't have a toilet, but many do. Most club sites have very good facilities.

Hi. Dave n Gill.
For many years we have used normal roll in our various caravan toilets. With no issues whatsoever.
since we got our latest and our first new van we carried on again with no problems.
However at the first service our mobile workshop (approved) service engineer was appalled at the site of a pack of Andrex in the bathroom cupboard. He gave us a very well mannered and light hearted dressing down whilst explaining that normal toilet roll doesn't react properly with the chemicals in the toilet and will very likely cause a blockage within our cassette.
Not to mention using the wrong stuff would very likely invalidate our toilet guarantee.
So with this in mind we have since used the correct roll from the caravan shop. Thereby significantly increasing the value of our van when we have a full pack on board.
So whilst not really answering your question and at the risk of more experience forum members disagreeing with me I can only speak from our experience and that is that I honestly cannot see the difference.
best regards Brian

We just take them from the stock we keep and use at home.

As this is your first venture with the van my recomendation is to dump the loo contents every morning so the quantity is small, everything is "fresh" and no real demands are placed on the chemicals.

Leaving things too long finds out the short comings of the chemicals; IMO it is better to use half the chemicals and empty every 24 hours, than fully dose up and try to go maximum time.

We use the cheaper supermarket own brands, and not the thick quilted stuff. Never had a blockage.

We just take rolls from the household stock, no difference in performance cf Thetfords expensive alternative. The trick to having a loo that is trouble free is to ensure a thorough wash out when you empty it. Don't skimp on the water used to clean it.

I would agree that the most trouble-free method for a happy Thetford is to use plenty of water to wash out the cassette. And I know this next bit is slightly off-topic, but PLEASE folks, don't put any wet wipes or sanitary products of any sort in the cassette or down your loo at home! The manufacturers of these products always claim they are flushable, and technically they are, but they do not get broken down in the sewage treatment works, and end up blocking filters, or even worse, causing pollution in the sea. Just ask the organisation "Surfers Against Sewage"! (Or any of the environmental groups.)
Ok, I'll get off my soap box now... happy holidays everyone!

Apologies for keeping off topic but I bought a small book from a library sale years ago which gives details of every coastal sewage outlet, some of which discharge several metres from the beach past low tide.
Some good loo roll advice has been given, we use supermarket loo roll but not the quilted variety, and I emty the cassette every day.
Surprisingly some people are unaware that the spout can be removed from the cassette for cleaning by twisting the spout round until the retaining lugs are lined up to the free position and tugging to ease it off taking care not to disturb the rubber seal.

Following on from Parksys advice there are videos on YouTube that show step by step all maintence or repair on Thetfords. People don't realise how simple it is which saves costs to dealers. Spares are easily available.

In 46 years caravanning, I have never used anything other than domestic loo roll. I also wait until the loo is almost full before emptying, as if you empty every day the chemical doesn't get chance to do its stuff. This info came from the MD of the company that makes One-Shot loo chemical.
Aside from that, I'm a mean old sod, and emptying every two or three days saves on chemical!

Avoid Thetfords own solutions. Overpriced. Underperforms imo. Made in Holland certain chemicals are omitted compared to say Elsan Diamond blue and pink.
we use ours for everything
.99% of solids are dissolved. No bad odours and ordinary supermarket rolls ok.

The mechanic was partly correct as Andrex in addition to the quilted varety of roll is one of the worst loo rolls to use in a cassette, however any normal supermaket loo roll like Cushelle will be fine. Thetford is way over priced at £3 plus for 4 rolls!
