Low emission zones

Hi thereI am sure there has been a thread about low emission zones in Europe but I cannot find it. This week I have read that you need to buy a sticker if you travel in Germany. We have been through Germany many times using the main motorways but have not bought a sticker. I thought these were only needed if you were to drive into the city centres. Can someone confirm this either way please. We shall be using the main routes passing Koln, Bonn, Mainz, Frankfurt, Wurzburg, Nurnberg, Munich and Stuttgart. Thanks BarryB

Yes, if you are only in transit and don't leave the motorway, you do not need a sticker anywhere.

Whilst I'm pretty sure Lutz and Val are correct, it may be wise to check out the regulations on a more formal web site.

If you are a memebr of one of the motoring organisations (AA, Green Flag, RAC etc) check out their web sites or drop them a line. Better to be safe than sorry.

Lutz knows what he is talking about he lives there. More about it on here on page Tolls, Vignettes and Emmisions. Details on getting an getting a Plakett on there too.

Hi prof, with all due respect 'formal websites' over the years i have found these 'formal website' ie green flag and the AA to be error ridden and out of date. Good for the basics and maybe they have inproved but i would never solely trust either of the two i have used over the years to be anything other then a loose guide.....frankly i would trust Lutz and Val above either of those formal sites....

Lutz is correct. We got our sticker from TUV very efficient and cheaper than other sites. You just need to be able to scan the V5 as a JPEG. Although we didn't plan to drive into any LEZ it did come in useful in Dresden.
