LPG

I am new to caravanning as this is our first year i have tried to be methodical in planning trips etc.I checked out a local supplier to re fill LPG (Homebase) and they want £30 to refill a gas bottle. Why is it so expensive when my local supplier only charges 70p a litre for my car compared to double the cost to fill a bottle.
When i mentioned this to my car filler he said that you could now buy a bottle to refill yourself, has anyone heard of this.Someone was arranging to visit him to discuss this matter.
Any input would be appreciated as i would like to keep my costs down, especially as we plan to be out most weekends.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The reason is that you're paying for the hire of the bottle, and the safety checks that it is subject to upon return. No doubt there is a massive paper trail which must be paid for.

Use the biggest bottle you can as a 13kg propane refill is only a few quid more than a 3.9kg refill.

Hello Mcghee,

I am disapointed you even mentioned the refill adaptor, as you say it is illegal to use them and contrary to the lease agreement you have when you take a calor bottle.

On top of that unless you are trained and have access to the correct measuring equiepemnt you can over fill Calor ( and other supplier only filled bottles) bottles which has some very serious safety issues.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES ATTEMPT TO REFIL CALOR SUPPLIED BOTTLES - always return them to the calor supplier.

I did quite clearly state that they are illegal to use.

Will every post where a forum user admits to doing marginally over the speed limit now be removed for mentioning an illegal act?

This kind of big brother nonsense has gone quite far enough for me thankyou.
