Hi

Travelling down to Cornwall in a few weeks time on a Friday. I know this is probably a silly question but is there a better time to be travelling on the M5 around the Bristol area? hubby is thinking about aiming to get round Bristol for breakfast time. Thanks in advance. Annette

Hi Annette,

I live in Bristol and Fridays on the M5 are never very good, BUT the long term roadworks making the extra lane have now been finished. At breakfastime on a Friday you should be ok. The only alternative is through the city but that would be unthinkable at that time of day!

Good luck

Russ

Hello Annette, If it is a Friday or Saturday I would be more concerned about the A30 during mid morning. Two years ago we stayed at Baltic Wharf, Bristol leaving at 7.30 to travel to Merrose Farm at St Mawes. We spent most of the day stationary on the A30 finally arriving at the site at 4.30 in the afternoon.

Last year I took the advice of other caravanners and travelled down to Cornwall overnight had a great journey without a single hold up

Hi Annette.

I drove through Bristol on the M5 this morning at about 8.15 and saw very little trafic, having said that, Fidays can be a bit of a pig. Generally the earlier you are, the better. It doesn't start to realy foul up till around 8am. Hope this helps.

Bart.

When travelling back from Devon on a Saturday a few weeks ago, there was a 6 mile queue going southbound into the roadworks.

We travelled down on a Sunday night without any problems and I would do this again next time.

annette, I live in Devon, its not so much bristol i would worry about at the moment, but Taunton/Wellington area, Nr Taunton Deane services, traffic down to 1 lane and absolute nightmare, especially northbound on your journey home..

ps - tip -

if you are going cornwall via the A30 - try to avoid taking a pit stop at MERRYMEET/WHIDDON DOWN services, there are currently roadworks there, but the services this weekend were absolute chaos.

Stop off a little a bit further down on the Okehampton/belstone services. - quieter

Hi Annette,

We have travelled from the Midlands (Leicestershire)to Cornwall on many occasions. Once to see the total eclipse of the Sun. We did that one over night and it was the best journey I had. Bit weird if you are a day person but you certainly avoid the jams!
