Hi all

Going away for first time this weekend in our new (secondhand)van. I have caravaned before but over 25years ago when my parents had one.I think we have everything sorted out and even if we hav'nt half the fun will be finding out how things work. There is one thing though that i would appreciate some advice on. When you make the front dinning area/lounge into a double bed what do you guys/gals put down onto the 'matteress'first. At home we have a mattress protector and sheet but this dos'nt seem practical in a van somehow, any advice from you seasoned vanners would be welcome.

Secondly, and this isnt directly van related but some-one may be able to help,we have a very large garage with a big double door and large windows. when-ever I open the door and leave it open for even a short period of time birds fly in and get stuck (ie cannot find their way out again. I think part of the problem may be because we live in a very small quiet hamlet in a raised position and I assume the birds think of it as a tunnel that they can fly through? There is also some stairs that go to an upstairs office/store and if they go up there its a devil of a job getting them out. It does effect my van in so much that if it is a pigeon that flies in(and there is one in there now) then a further dozen or so pigeons appear to see whats happened to their buddy and perch on the van then promptly cover it and the drive in s**t.I dont suppose anybody has any pearls of wisdom on how to keep them out other than blocking the rear window as I work in the garrage alot and need the natural light.

Thanks all

Martyn I have posted this tip before and it really did work for me ... buy a plastic owl and position it above the door, this should keep small birds away. This method stopped birds sitting on the branches of a tree which hang over my drive where I park my car.

Hi Martyn

We use a single sleeping bag but opened out as the base for our bed. If you can get one with a cotton interior, so much the better as it will be cooler. We then use two single duvets with covers which we find more comfortable than sharing one and also they fold up for storage very easily, but you can still have a cuddle under them!!

If your bed is rather hard like ours is, I recently bought a Raskelf memory foam overlay which you sleep directly on as it has a polycotton cover. This together with the duvet makes a very comfortable bed. Hope this helps.
