Mastic

Hello,

Some of the mastic on my 2005 Elddis Avante is discoloured and fairly brittle now. It's not in any really important areas like seams or the like, so I was thinking of removing it and re-masticing.

Does anyone know what kind to use ? I'm presuming it would have to be a special kind of caravan mastic ?

The first place I am looking at replacing is above the rubbing strip on the side of the van. It's nothing serious, just looking to improve the look.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Alex.

Hi Alex, if you go to your local dealer he'll sell you the correct sealant. It comes in two forms: either in a strip (rolled up) which is better for sealing behind awning rails etc or in a tube for applying with a mastic gun.

Both are the same formula, none drying.

if you are talking about the non-drying beding mastic in a tube(IDL) , then this should not be used on any rails which have a gasket/footing rubber because the rubber draws out the moisture in the mastic and will only last a couple of years. for rails only use either sicaflex or soudal fixall sealant.

Just one more thing you should watch out for that's not mentioned above, these mastics have a "use by date" and Ive regularly found outdated mastic on the dealers shelves, they tend to throw a few oldies in amongst the new tubes to get rid so check every tube.
