We are quite new to camping and Im looking for advice of how to get round a problem that keeps cropping up. We are a family of 5 but sometimes my sister and nephew will be come with us. I have tried to book a site in the Blackpool area for 7 people but am facing a problem that many caravan parks will only take a maximum of 6. One site I booked on told me that they have a 6 person limit but we went as a 5 and I know there were a few families with more than 6. Does anyone know how can I get round this problem? Is it acceptable to book as a 6 and hope they don't realise there's an extra person?

I hope I'm not going to open a can of worms here, but I don't think its a good idea to take an extra person in the hope they don't realise. In all honesty I wouldn't be too happy to be next door to a pitch where there are seven people, in this case two families on one pitch. It begs the question where does it all end? when Uncle Tom Cobbley and all kip down in the car for a cheap holiday? It might be acceptable for you but think of others who have gone away for some rest and relaxation. Even if your van is 6 berth you won't all be able to sit down at the same time inside and the potential is that you'll congregate in the awning to sit/drink/chatter till the small hours. I think 6 is more than enough traffic on one pitch and rules are there for a reason. If you have more than six in your party book two pitches and pay for two pitches, that way you will have sufficient room for all and neighbours can have the opportunity to enjoy their time away too.

I'm not a fan of large camping groups. As I mentioned on another post , we were caught in a pincer movement on a private site recently between two large camping groups. One was 3 women plus around 12 children. The other was 8 adults. The kids erected a makeshift football pitch alongside our caravan, the adults sat in a large open gazebo until 3am drinking and chatting. They were so close I was stepping over the guy ropes to get in the car. It was like camping at the V festival but without the acts so we packed up and left. Site operators should restrict parties like this unless they can put them in a separate field.
Think you need to clarify Lindsay, you say you are new to camping is this correct or do you have a van? As others have said think 6 is plenty to a pitch, if you are camping why not just book a second pitch as on most (not all) sites I have been on usually try and put tents together. That way as long as you observe the site rule about noise i;e no noise after a certain time think you will be OK

Our van, two pitches on the same side next to us, then two more vans, opposite side nearly the same set up, with in total 4 pitches empty ( both opposite one another ) a small van come on site with a small trailer on the back......
Two young-ish adults get out & start erecting a tent, then another & another & another & a gazebo........
Then they started doing the same on the other two pitches opposite...........
Turned out to be a naughty school's week end outing.....

We asked the site owner about what was happening, & was told that the pitches had been booked in seperate names, quite a long time before.......... ( crafty so & so's ) nothing going to stand out ??
But as long as there were only six per pitch on a night, that was ok

Something in the back of my mind seems to think that if you have a 2 berth van you could only have 2 people, a 4 berth 4 people, 5 berth 5 people and so on or am i mistaken ?.

We went to the lakes in may and next to us, there must have been 10 adults in a folding camper with 2 annexes, I really don't like anyone THAT much. They drank beer until late but did not make a noise or a mess so no problem.

A few years ago we visited a C&CC certified site not far from Chepstow.
The site was a mile or so from the road along a track through woodland and it opened out into a large campsite overlooking the Wye valley with views to die for.
There were a couple of caravans along the hedge at the back of the site and we pitched away from these some way down the slight forward slope near to an ehu bollard so that we could make the best of the views across the valley towards Tintern.
There were a few tenters dotted about during the week who we didn't take much notice of and more arrived toward the weekend, camping near to large boulder enclosures where they could build campfires.
Friday dawned sunny and warm, we went out and about and did some sightseeing during the afternoon arriving back on site around tea time.
To our amazement, when we came back there were vehicles parked very close to our caravan ( 6 feet away) including a hand painted black ex post office Sherpa immediately in front of our caravan completely blocking our view and way too close.
I was bristling with anger, how dare these people pitch up in this odd assortment of old bangers so close to us.
I saw one of the younger (30-40 ish) new age types wandering about and told him in no uncertain terms to get the van and the other vehicles off our pitch.
He eventually unearthed the owner of the van from amongst the throng, a middle aged tattooed woman with the usual bits of metal sticking out of her nose clad in shapeless black garments and big boots. Needless to say, the Sherpa wouldn't start so she had to round up some of her multi tattooed with strangely coloured hair male counterparts to shove it out of the way.
These Goths apparently camp at this otherwise beautiful CS most weekends, they lit a huge bonfire inside the ring of boulders nearest to us where they sat drinking and talking far into the night.
The campfire did my chest no good at all ( I have to use three inhalers every day) and we could smell the woodsmoke inside our caravan for some time afterwards.
The site owner was a youngish widow, a nice lady but she wasn't interested in our complaint so, beautiful though it may be, that site is firmly off our 'to re-visit' list.
