No you dont have a problem, the fridge is 12volts so it will go off when you switch the charger off.

If you ran it off the battery it wouldn't last 5mins.

Off site you would use gas.

jim, the MCB is protecting both the fridge and charger but it is not their ON /OFF switches. On my Ace Award the Charger ON/OFF switch is part of the control box and is one of the switches above the row of MCB's. The fridge 240v is switched of as you know on the fridge itself by switching to OFF /gas or 12v.

Jim, it is quite normal to have a couple of items protected by one mcb, but there should be a separate switch for the charger as well.

It may well be the case that the van is designed to have the charger on all the time to provide a smooth 12v supply for the lights etc through the battery.

As for the fridge, the only time it will operate on 12v is when the 12s plug is connected to the car with the engine running, it will NEVER work directly from the on board charger or leisure battery.

The latest Dometic and Thetford fridges need a permanent 12V supply to operate the electronics

So if you are switching the 12V charger/battery off the fridge will not work on 230V either

Hi Jim

I have a Swift caravan which is fitted with the plug in systems equipment. On the control panel that houses the battery state meter and water tank level there should b a switch that says Charger on it. I turn this off when we leave the van for the day and the fridge stays on. I dont touch the mcb as this is only for errors in the electric system. The battery charger and Fridge both share a switch.

Hope this helps.

Jim, your control box is not the same as mine but it is detailed in my handbook. As you know MCB3 is the protection for the Fridge and Charger. It is NOT their ON/OFF switch and should be in the ON position unless it has tripped under a fault condition [or it has been switched OFF for some other reason].

The battery charger ON/OFF switch is the right hand switch in the row of switches above the MCB's.

I do not know what fridge you have but the mains voltage can be switched OFF by turning the combined Off /12v / Gas/ 230v switch to any position except 230v or in the case of a seperate 230v switch just switched OFF.

Ray
