Memory foam mattress topper

Has anyone got one?

I know they are expensive, but if it stops my backache sleeping on them, it will be worth it. If you do have one, do you have the seat as is, or do you turn them over and sleep on the underside?

Also when you turn to your pit, do you sleep head at front window, or sleep sideways.

Mike

Yes, we have them and they are great. Well worth the money. SWMBO gets a good nights sleep now, with minimal backache. We turn the seats over and sleep on across the 'van, as I am well over 6 feet tall.

Hi Mike

Yes memory foam toppers can be pricey but they are worth every penny if your caravan matresses are uncomfortable for some reason. Our matresses were too hard for me and the topper makes a HUGE difference. We use our beds mainly as singles so I sleep with head at front window but the choice is yours. Turning the seats over makes them even more comfortable.

Haven't tried mattress topper myself but have heard they're very good. I always turn the cushions over with knee roll underneath and on the outside edge of the bed.

On that point why don't they make caravan cushions flat like normal sofas and cover both sides. That way you wouldn't have any bother with the lumpy knee roll bit and if a cushion got damaged it could be easily turned over.

Excuse me, I'm a bit thick. Serious question. What exactly does the matress topper do? Does it take the shape of your body? What happens when you turn over? What does it remember?

Yes expensive, but it does seem to prevent aches and pains from over-hard caravan mattresses (why are they so hard, especially in a fixed bed like ours?). Also quite heavy if you are near your load limit. We got ours from Jonic - delivery took a long time but miraculously happened next day after I rang to enquire. Probably a one-off misttake.

Hi,

We purchased one as my husband always had backache when sleeping in the van, yes it was heavy and a kerfuffle to keep getting it out each night and putting it away, but it was worth it, really comfortable. My mum and dad sleep separately in their van and put their toppers beneath the seat cushions during the day.

We now have the topper on our fixed bed van, also have mattress protector and fitted sheet made by Jonic to incorporate the extra mattress height. Highly recommended.

Val.

My wife suffers from Arthritis. We invested in a mattress topper from raskelf, whilst not the cheapest on the market it is probably the best investment we have made , as she manages to get a better nights sleep in the caravan than at home, and at home we have a specialist mattress.

How heavy are these things?

A rough cal based on a density of 65kg/cubic metre indicates a 2" thick double bed job is about 10 kg.

Quite a bit of additional weight in an aft bed layout, enough to need thinking about.

We just use a double quilt underneath our double sleeping bag and it's really comfy. Good if it turns cold too as you can use it on top instead. We were going to buy a mattress topper but tried the quilt first and jobs-a-good-un. Worth a go before investing in a proper topper.

Memory foam was first used by NASA for space flight and since then it has come through into the bedding market. It is like a foam mattress but different to old style pieces of foam. It reacts to the heat from your body and just gives nice comfortable support. I think the 'memory' part is the fact that it comes back to shape over and over again. There is no problem when turning over etc. as the matress just stays put. The result is just a feeling of comfort and good support.

We have a baileys series 5 twin dinnette and have made the end dinnette into a permant bed,we splashed out on a memory foam mattress. Well worth the extra cost.

What with that and my earplugs... sleep like a baby 🙂
