Starting to think about next year's holidays and we're fancying having our main 2 weeks in Cornwall. Like the look of Merrose Farm CC site and wondered if anybody has been and can tell us what it's like please?

Just a little concerned about the approach to the site as it states on the website that it's a single track road controlled by traffic lights - does this work ok? After our experience in Anglesey at SBH this year, we're a little wary of single track roads (fortunately, we didn't meet anything coming the other way on the tow in or out but it was on our minds every time we travelled down the road!)

What's the area like as we usually go to Newquay or Perranporth and fancied a change this time? We must have toilets/showers and EHU and like to have a launderette and kid's play area but last 2 are not essential.

Thanks in anticipation.

We've been there several times and have enjoyed our stays very much. The site is typical CC club with good facilities and level pitches, mainly (as I recall) hardstanding. There are some grassy pitches near the play area and dog walk at the top of the site. The traffic-lights system works very well in that you will not meet anything coming the other way. The only down side is that if you just miss them, you have to wait a long time. The nearest shop is at Portscathoe which is a 10-minute car journey away. The general store has delicious Cornish Pasties and the nearby pub does good food. When we stayed a fish and chip van was on site once or twice a week and, although a bit expensive, the food was lovely. There are loads of places to visit and we enjoyed our trip to Truro via the ferry. You can get onto the coastal path from the site but it's a bit of a walk. If you like walking visit the Roseland Peninsular where you can park up and do a circular walk. If it were not so far for us we would go more often.

Thanks very much Ron, some really useful information. Just a little concerned that it might be too quiet although that might not be a bad thing.

Cheers again.

I agree with Ron's reply its a lovely site and the traffic light system works fine.

Great local beaches as well which are away from the main tourist spots.

Stayed there in 2005 and found it an excellent site. St Mawes is just down the road but get there before 10 am if you wish to get a parking space. There are boat ferries to Truro etc. In fact parking, and the extortionate charges was the main reason why we have never gone back to Cornwall.

However, there is a good pub on the road to the King Harry Ferry.

The traffic light system works well, and in fact is better for access than other sites. Devon can be real 'fun' on the nerves.

Clair & Rob,

Been last 4 years and will be there again next summer. Our previous visits to Cornwall when our children were small did not leave us with a very warm desire to ever return but our 1st visit to this area was a bit Narnia ish if you like because it was like stepping back a bit to times past when you could enjoy a holiday without being immersed in the frenetic and frantic activities of the great British holiday crowds....(and attendant traffic)

Yes it is quiet, but you can leave your vehicle behind and walk out of the site cross the road and down the next lane and you will be in paradise...

You are close to St Mawes and therefore a range of ferry boat trips starting with Falmouth and up as far up as Truro. Various nice clean beaches abound that will not be overcrowded even during school holidays and the site itself will not disappoint.

I agree with Paul's comment regarding the beaches. However, watching children building sandcastles while wearing anoraks (in July) kinda took the magic out of it. Yes, I have had hot summers in Cornwall but the last one I recall was 1956. Since then I am afraid I prefer to double my bets and head for the Med.
