The ones sold in Morrisons/Asda etc are about as small as you can get.

Samsung used to do a compact one but I tried in vain to get on a couple of years ago.

They all seem to be about 17in wide

Question is-where do you put it? When these are manufacturer installed, is the cabinet ventilated? I believe that size (in this case)is not the only consideration, as power consumption on start up may be quite high?

Another question is,,"Do you REALLY need a microwave?" in a caravan? How many times will you actually use one? and is the extra weight worth the trouble?

We tend to buy and use fresh produce while on holiday, so nothing is frozen and needs defrosting, and the ordinary cooker or BBQ sees to the rest.

WE use our microwave much more than the van cooker

Its very useful for heating up pies, ready meals/soup and when we barbecue we always cook things like chicken in the microwave first to ensure its well done in the middle.

The baked potatoes with/without cheese are always great with a barbecue as well.

Wouldn't be without it after 18+ years use (now on 2nd one).

It depends on the van.

Elddis in their 2 berth vans make it easy with lots of cupboard space.

I installed one in place of 2 drawers in the Cleremont with the drawer fronts as a cover.

Last time out we installed one in the bottom of a wardrobe in my friends van .This was boxed in and the vent on the side was piped outside with blown air ducting via a Carver Junior fan unit.

In our last Ace Statesman the only place was under the bed(vented through the floor) via the internal door .This was not as good as the factory fitted one in the present Oklahoma.

I have to say that where some manufacturers fit them is dangerous when they are installed and roof level and even above the hobs.

In these litigeous times ???

Most caravan accessory shops have microwave ovens intended for in 'van use with due consideration given to weight and power demand.

Hi Rodney,

Another caravanner like myself from North Wales. We have a 2004 Senator Wyoming. It does not have a microwave fitted as standard but we have a reasonable sized microwave which we keep permantly in the caravan. It travels on the caravan floor over the axle and when on site there is just enough room for it on the worktop. This enables us to use a larger microwave and you do not get the condensation problems which we have had with some fitted microwaves. If you have an awning the microwave can be set up on a small table in the awning. We use the microwave a lot, after all if you have paid for the electric why not use it! If your microwave is inside the caravan make sure you switch on your extractor fan before switching on your microwave, and leave the extractor on for a couple of minutes after cooking to avoid condensation. Sorry if this sounds basic but I have been in a lot of caravans that use microwaves and are ringing wet with condensation. Also check the ampage of the site electrics as you may need to switch something off before using your micrOWAVE.

HOpe this helps.

HAMER.

There is likely to be little difference in weight at the caravan dealers but they will cost more.

They may be slightly lower wattage and they will have some 12V ones at a lot higher price.

We have had at least 6 vans with the microwave fitted and not found condensation to be a problem but when in a confined space they have been vented to the outside.

We all have things to suit our own ideas but our friends got so fed up with lifting the microwave out every time in their Bordeux that we made the modification of putting it in the bottom of the wardrobe as posted above.

Since some modern vans have these factory fitted, I had a look at the Bessacarr website, where I found PDF type handbooks. These have full details of the type of microwave recommemnded, with such details as size, power input, power output and weight being particularly useful to us. I amagine you won't go far wrong if you stick to this type of specification

We converted a cupboard in our caravan into a microwave shelf. Far more use, and we run a small 850W microwave from it without any problem at all.
