Kev, almost all microwave ovens are made in, normally, one of three power levels, I cannot remember the exact numbers but something like 750w, 850w and 1000w.

The problem with them is not the cooking level, which is what the food industry use as guidelins for cooking, bu the start up power draw which is roughly twice the rated figure, so a 1000w cooker will draw 2000w on initial start.

That is where the problem comes in, if you have other high drain appliances on, such as the electric heating, at the same time you will trip the van electrics and probably the pole as well, which may lead to loss of power to other site users, who may be less than happy.

As long as you go for one of the lower power ones and make sure all high drain appliances are off when the micro is in use you should not have any problem.

Kev Bailey and Swift don't fit low powered ones(they cost more)

So long as you switch off heaters and kettles etc the standard 700/800W microwave is OK on most UK sites

700W built-in microwave oven (from Swift website)

I come back to the same comment. Watch the weight. I used one for a season but had to carry it in the boot as putting it in the van overloaded it, or something else had to be left out. It also took up a lot of space in the boot and after 1 season we ditched it. Yes, it can be useful on a wet day to make a quick meal, or even an M&S takeaway, but as you already have a hob and usually an oven, do you really need it?? Get a BBQ or even one of those lightweight gas burners, and do some real cooking outside.

Its great that we are all different

We would far sooner have the microwave than the oven and have had them in the van for 18 years!!

Variety is the spice of life

With regard to power of micro-waves, most are rated at 650 - 950 watt depending on make and size. Your going to plug it into a socket you probably plug a kettle into and thats a 1000 watt minimum usually 3000 watt if using the normal house kettle. Most will have a fuse rating of 5 amps and your typical hookup is 16 amps. Just remember what else you may have plugged in when in use. Also don't forget the additional weight.
