My sister in-law gets bites wherever she goes, in Scotland last year she bought Midge Patches from "Highland Midge Company" and never had one bite.

Her Ladyship is an Avon rep Christine and I used it. We were told by a lady in a shop in Oban that the local fishermen use it. Wives who have hubbies in the S.A.S. here buy it for them when going abroad. Guess what, it didn't stop the b*ggers biting me though :O( I was covered over my arms.

Her Ladyship has never had one bite, I tell her they don't go for bad meat :O)

Killin is nothing! The place to avoid is Kinlochewe. The pitches back on to vegetation and the midges are horrendous around August time. Mind you, it's only the female midge that bites and neither sex can cope with wind of more than a few mph.

The midge season is from end of May to end of Aug.

That's why we go to the highlands early may before the little blighters have got themselves geared up!!

Maureen, for more than thirty years now, we have gone on a hill walking holiday (self catering) with a group of friends and we have either gone in April or the first full week in May. As a result, we have always avoided the midges!

To be honest, they rarely bite me but I do find them annoying when they crawl into my ears etc!

Colin,

You don't have to go to Scotland to be terrorised by midges......Kielder is notorious for them and Some places in the Lake District are also known for them.....and NO they are NOT Scottish Midges who have emigrated.!!!!

I have heard Kielder is bad but I've never been bit by them in the Lake District Lady Mo and if anyone is going to get bit by Caledonius Midgium it's me :O(

Something I've been told recently is if you do get bit it means you have a zinc deficiency and need to take tablets.

Any volunteers to test out the theory please?

Oh and another, don't wear dark clothes, that's another I've not heard of. So to sum up go around in the nuddy. Any volunteers to test that one out please?

You've obviously got a 'thing' about other people's nakedness, LB ;-) - you used a good ruse to find out who goes in the nuddy on our forum too (www.carryoncamping.org)...........!! ROFL

I read somewhere that eating Marmite once a day (for a few weeks before you arrive) kept midges away.

Don't know how true that is. Worth a try.

If you like Marmite, that is.
