'Midges' in W. Scotland.

Would like to go from the 7th September,

but many reviewers of sites, on UK Campsite, say

avoid the 'midge' season.

Does anyone know when is the 'season'

You should normally be OK visiting Scotland in Setpember. The midge season usually runs over July and August. Usually it is the West coast that suffers the most.

However, if it is unseasonally warm and damp you may have problems as they just love these conditions!!!

We have found the candles in a glass very useful for lighting a dusk in the awning and they seem to keep most biters away, even killing some at the same time!

Shep the worst midges I have ever experienced were at Strontian in Arnamurchan during a mild september. The east coast is a better bet for midges but the west coast is far more spectacular.

Kinlochewe was still heavily "midged" at the beginning of last September.When we moved to Morvich there were none.
 
I was hillwalking near Kinlochewe (or Kinlochmidge as my wife renamed it) in July. The landlady at our B&B said the midges hadn't been bad this year or last year. We certainly didn't experience many this year.

I am just back from ten days at Morvich and Culloden with the 'van. Midges were almost non-existant, and certainly not troublesome. What is required is a light breeze. That defeats the little b*****s
 
Hi folks,

Someone said recently that all the rain that we have had this summer has killed off a lot of midges.Don't know whether it is true,but we caqn live in hope !

In general, the midge season lasts until October but they're not too bad from September onwards. We've found the best midge deterrent is the one they sell at many retailers in the West of Scotland - can't remember what it's called but it's made locally and is very effective and about
 
I have posted this before, I work for the electricity company covering the west of scotland and we use Deet free "Shoo", www.shoo.org and avon skin so soft in the blue bottles. Works very well for us. A midge net is still a godsend though.
