Midges

Read in our local paper yesterday that a couple of people from the Black Isle have started to import patches impregnated with thiamine also known as vitamin B12. It would appear that midges don't like the smell and will leave you alone.

It says that the patched are available at outlets across the Highlands, and on line at www.highland-midge.co.uk

The article mentioned that these patches are used by the US Military and film crews who are making films in insect infested areas.

I just thought I would pass it on, never tried them yet,but looking to use them.

ps I have no interest in this company just passing on the info from the paper.

Hi Frank, friends of ours who are CC wardens told us that they take vitamins which included B12 and these prevented the Midges.

We are off to Bunree at the end of August so I think we will give the patches a try.

With the amount of water around this year I would not mind an interest in them as IF the weather were to warm up a bit midges could become a major Scots export.

Brewers' yeast tablets contain Thiamine - and midges and other insects don't appear to like the smell of Brewers' Yeast about a person, so you could do equally well (and probabably save some money) by buying a cheap pack of Brewers' yeast and taking that just before and during your holiday

I have been telling Val for years I only drink beer to keep the midges away, so I will copy and paste your reply to her e-mail ( it looks more official then )

I have used Avon Skin So Soft with the same results........but I like the beer angle better.

We were stopping at Bunree a couple of weeks ago and the midges were not really a problem , probably because of the weather!!

The following week we moved down to Keilder Water, I know everybody says this is midge heaven but we weren't expecting things to quite as bad as they were. Absolutely unbearable, really took the edge off our 4 night stay. No wonder the site was barely half full. Shame as it is a good spot.
