To the west, south of the river on what on my maps is the D992 [they change road numbers with the weather!] on road to Saint Georges-de-Luzencon.

I will see if Google street has the view. This route takes you first to the visitor centre; worth the stop.

Yes Google Street has the views.

Enter 44.07964, 3.00527 in Google maps; go to "street view" [using the little orange man] and look round, then use it to "drive" along the D992.

Last September we stopped at an Aire just north of the bridge. You can climb a hill and get a sort on look down view of the bridge. The only problem is that if you are with a caravan you might not want to leave it as it would probably take 15/20 minutes to get to the view point and back. Obviously if you are in the area with your car its not a problem.

If you're not towing then I think there are lots of places to get a good view. Those mentioned above are some of the, but also are any/or all of the following:

1. On the road from Millau to Rodez - long distance view, but wonderful.

2. On the old road going up out of Millau towards La Cavalerie - in front of McDonalds, continue up the hill and stop at the corner on the left, at the top.

3. At the top of the Punch d'Aghast, where the hang gliders fly from.

4. Under the bridge itself - absolutely the only place where you'll get any sense of just how high and how big it actually is.

I know David, and we've been there many many times over the years. My OH is an engineer in major constructions, and we regularly visit the Tarn/Millau areas, so we've watched the progress of the bridge from 'conception'. We actually had bets, years ago, on where the route would actually go across the valley - and needless to say he won (being only metres out of the actual point where it crossed! We used to go to the visitor centre every time we went down there.

When the viaduct was opened in December 2004 we were in France for the opening day, but we weren't the first British across, unfortunately. We'd made a special trip to see it and to be at the opening ceremony, but they actually opened it a day early. However, that day it was only open to local traffic and people with 'permits'. Had we realised that the first 'public' crossings would not take place until the following day we'd have made more of an effort to get there early that day!

Since then we've driven across it several times, but now prefer to go back down into Millau via the old road, and marvel at it from underneath or one of the other viewing points, rather than drive across.

The visitor centre below the bridge has a small theatre which shows a film of the construction....awesome. Don't forget to buy the car sticker for the rear screen!!

There is a good campsite in Millau town on the banks of the river - in fact it is called the Two rivers.

Follow the old road through the town southwards and up the hill for about two miles and you will find a viewpoint on the left - it may be necessary to pass it , continue for another mile or so to turn round and then come back to it.

When you come back towards millau reaching the river level trun left rather than right into the town, and follow the road to the visitor centre under the centre span.

after this continue on the road and take a left turn in the next village which takes you up to the autoroute crossing the bridge from the south. Drive across - slowly - get the BH to take some photos as you go, and then go to the visitor centre at the north end. then you have to continue north and pay the toll, another mile or so and turn right onto the old road and come back into Millau from the north.

Toll fees for car plus caravan are very high in high season, os it is worth taking the old raod and paying the site fee for one night.

Really worth seeing.
