Hi folks - I am about to embark on a trip to Switzerland with my compass lynx 340/2 caravan - the caravan is 1.95 metres wide - I can see clearly down both sides of the caravan with my car mirrors - despite this am I required to fit extension mirrors to my car when travelling through Europe

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't fit extension mirrors, as I'm not familiar with other countries legislation on such matters, but in the UK, the law does not require extension mirrors PROVIDED the tow vehicles indigenous mirrors are capable of the required field of view when the trailer is attached.

I would always advise fitting them regardless of whether or not you need them. I know the French gendarmes will look at a car towing a caravan and take the view that it should have extension mirrors fitted and stop the car if it doesn't have them. OK, so you might be able to successfully argue that you don't need them but I don't think it's worth the hassle.

Very much agree with Paul. You particularly need good vision on the non driver side of the van when joining autoroutes near cities as the run ins can be very short and angled to the main carriageway. After some experiment I use convex mirrors which give a wider field of view although a smaller image. Milenco Grand Aero would be my choice - see the other threads about mirrors currently in this category
