Has anybody tried one of the small solar panels for charging a mobile phone? I am baffled (easy), by the plethora of panels available!.

Yes, and I wasn't impressed. The one I had was part of a power bank, the idea being to recharge the power bank during the day, then use the bank to recharge the phone over night. As with your other question about solar panes for caravans, most of the panels sold for phone charging are smaller than necessary to develop a full recharge in a single day.
It will be more effective to use the bigger solar panel on the caravan and use the 12V usb adaptors to recharge phones over night, or use the car!

If you are driving around in the car on these off-grid days you can also use an in-car charger.
