Modeo 2.0ltr Automatic

I'm thinking of getting a new 2.00ltr (140PS) automatic Mondeo. Has anyone got any first hand knowledge of what these are like as a tow car. The manual version with the same engine, (I have a 2010 model), is excellent. Any comments before I spend my pension would be very welcome.

Hello John,

Your description of your car is incomplete, Ford do a 140bhp model in both petrol and diesel form, and what body and trim level?

I suggest you Google "towing diesel vs petrol" and read up. there are several references to Mondeo's so your will probably finds some useful information there.

As a general note though, The Mondeo has earned its self a fine reputation as a tow car, and the diesels seem to be favoured by most.

I am sure there will be someone along soon with first hand experiences for you.

Thanks Prof. They are, in fact, diesel, both the manual one that I currently own and the automatic that I'm thinking about. The model is Titanium (estate) but I don't think this aspect will affect the car's ability as a tow vehicle it is only the number of gadgets that elevate a Zetec to Titanium as I'm sure you know. It is really the performance with an automatic gearbox that I'm curious about.

Hello John,
It wasn't clear from your opening post that you intened to stay with the same fuel or body shape and trim level, hence my posting.
If you scan the data pages you will find evidence that a whole host of apparently small differences between models can impact the towing capabilities.
So when asking for this type of advice its as well to provide enough information to be unambiguous.
Make
Model
Body type
Trim level
Engine fuel
Engine size (and tuning)
and Manufactured year
It may seem strange, but a model that spans several years of production in apprently the same Mk and trim level could have different towing limits, the manufacturer could have changed the clutch, or even the engine. For example Renault produced the phase three Espace from 1997 through to about 2003 with a 2.2 diesel. They changed the engine in mid model which changed the permitted towed weight limit. - same size engine, but from DT to DCI specification.

Any way I hope someone will be along to give their impressions.
