Unless I've gone barking mad I thought the quality and constructive posts were all well within the forum rules??

A warning was posted on that topic that if it started to degenerate into the usual state it would be removed.

It did start to degenerate, and it was removed.

Any "degeneration" must have taken place quite late yesterday evening.

If a post was that offending why not just remove it rather than the whole thread which seemed very reasonable to me.

Many members made some very constructive observations and comments which were undoubtedly useful to others and indeed may have persuaded previous offenders not to offend any more.

Dusty, I enquired as to the threads whereabouts at 7.41pm, so the offending remarks must have been made before then.

I agree with what you have written this morning.

I don't know what the offending remarks were or even if it was I that upset the powers in charge. Whoever it was it would have made more sense to have deleted that post and emailed the person concerned the reasons why or even edited the post. This is something that Parksy normally does so I guessed that he wasn't behind the thread being removed.

If it is easier to delete the whole thread because one hasn't got time to do the above one needs to question whether acting as a Moderator is the right thing.

As members of a forum there's a very fine line that shouldn't be crossed but unfortunately sometimes it is, depending if anyone takes offence. The same goes for moderating, that fine line is still there and when it's crossed it changes from moderating to dictating, hence a Moderator becomes a Dictator.

How would any member of the forum know they had crossed that line from the statement "It did start to degenerate, and it was removed"?

The action of deleting the whole thread instead of the posts that were deemed to be whatever is like using a sledge hammer to crack a walnut.

But what happens when it is not the forum members that start to degenerate the thread? Take the 'Toilet Chemicals' threat for example!!! Or is it then acceptable

I suppose a distinction can be drawn in the type of degeneration. Is it degenerating in content or in mood. I can quite see that if the content is so very offensive that "an average person" (the legal yardstick) would be offended and repulsed, the mods should quite rightly remove any material which is offensive or repulsive (as described by LB and others) to restore it to its previous good natured and slightly humorous state, but bearing in mind that we are talking about "an average person", not an isolated person or person. If however, the degeneration is in mood where someone is trying to inject potentially abrasive and offensive material into a thread, attempting to destroy its good natured atmosphere, it is imperative that the mods act early and decisively. Whilst unsure which of these scenarios applies in this case and whilst questioning whether it was necessary to delete the whole thread, I certainly do not condemn the mods because it's a job

where you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Shall now grab and wife and newly-exercised dog and retreat into my bomb shelter.
