Tyres failing an MOT suggests they were well down, and by your own admission that they only seem to be lasting 8 to 10K miles really suggests to me that something is wrong.
The MOT only checks the condition of tyres and suspension systems, they don't check that every thing is fully aligned. Given the concerns you have about tyre wear, I think it would be worth having the geometry of the cars suspension and running gear fully checked.

PS. These were 16" wheels on a '54 plate ghiaI ran my mondeo 130 tdci estate, towing a 1500Kg caravan on Michelins, and consistently got 22,000 from the fronts, 44,000+ from the rears. The rears could have gone a little longer but I changed them every other time I changed the fronts.
Which spring assisters and do you find it better?that is what they told me when they were fitted and it also depends on how you drive on how long the tyres last. i have also added spring assistors on it just incase it sat low. so far i have done 13k on my tyres and the fronts are on 5mm and the rears are on 7mm so they have a long time left on them
