As no one has relied to your query, Lesley, I though my very outdated information might be of some use. We went to Montescudaio in 1987, so I'm sure there have been some changes since then. However, it was an excellent site, with good facilities- super washrooms, a good pool and a brilliant pizzaria. The drawbacks were those you mention, a lack of good beaches and longish distances to the main tourist attractions of Tuscany. Our solution was to alternate days relaxing on the site, which the children loved, with longer trips out to places such as Pisa, Lucca and Livorno, Volterra and Siena. Florence is quite a way, but I would still say worth the effort. Just bribe the children with promises of lots of ice-cream! Ours were aged between seven and fourteen when we took them there, and they all had a brilliant holiday, including the trips out.
