I have been a caravanner for 33 years and like the the idea of using the van as a hub while I visit the area and not having to arrange the van when you want to do small journeys. I have just come back from touring New Zealand South Island in a 22 foot campervan which I found ideal for touring there travelling from one place to the next giving you the independence to stay wherever you finished the day. Even the size didn't cause problems as the roads in towns and coutryside are wide, apart from the one lane bridges. Some site pitchs could be a bit tight though. There are very few caravans there. One tip if anybody goes is to see what you can before to stop for the night and if you are going to be late ring ahead to reserve a pitch. I took an old mobile which I had unlocked and bought a NZ Vodafone SIM card. The experience although no problems in NZ has confirmed my preference for a caravan in touring UK and even in Europe.

Make your own choice for your own reasons. I've seen a few Motohomes that have gone out of control in high winds or at speed. Not a pretty sight and they don't tend to have the same saftey features as a car!

A race friend had a VW van and a motorhome based on the same chassis and engine. The motorhomes running costs were far higher all though the van did more miles and at higher speeds!

Stress on the Motorhomes engine and running gear was considered to be far higher by VW dealers And within three years the motorhome was no longer "reliable" in the usual VW way.

I must agree with Jennifer regarding the motor home/caravan debate. I have just returned from Paignton after a long weekend Easter break and had a great time. We had no problems with travelling or parking the beast. We visited small coastal resorts as well as the larger towns and coped very well. The journey home to Bridgend took us just over 2.5 hours and there was no problems snaking etc. Can't see us going back to a caravan. As far as Lord B's reply to Jennifer we do not need this forum, there is a motorhome forum similar to this, however this forum can be more amusing and admittedly very helpful on many occassions. Therefore Lord B all I can say is yes we do like to fratenise with caravaners as we have similar interests and hopefully you tuggers will accept us with good grace as part of an enjoyable hobby. Please do not try to cause friction between the two groups but lets proceed as one for all and all for one. United we stand shoulder to shoulder.
