Moving a Caravan

Hi,

I am hoping you can help. My parents and I bought a caravan it's 8 foot long and none of the vehicles we have are big enough to tow it. We haven't been able to find anyone to tow it for us - does anyone know of a reliable firm which would move the caravan for us. The dealer we bought from had initially said he would do it - but when we phoned to confirm dates he is now saying it's illegal for him to move it. The caraven is currently just outside Gretna Green and we would like to move it to just outside Perth (in Scotland). Thank you for any advice.

Is it a touring or static caravan ( mobile home)?

Yes, unfortunately we didn't really realise at the time that the caravan was non standard.

Sorry got confused between feet and meters the van including tow bar is 9.8 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, and it is a touring van. Thanks, sorry for any confusion

Susan, The van is too big to tow legally with a "normal" car derived vehicle. There are many companies who deliver caravans and boats throughout the UK. It could though prove expensive at possibly

Another thought is to look for a sit with statics in the area, and ask who they use - a low-loader job, but if you are flexible on timing and phone round, you may be able to get a lorry returning empty to give you a good price.

If the van is 9.8 metres long that is 32' 2' long in old money.

That's some touring caravan ;-) or am I missing something!

Yes it's a fantastic van but just wish had known at the time that it was non standard and everything has been a real struggle to organise for it. Still not willing to trade it in as the size is what makes it so comfortable.... Thanks again for all your advice - greatly appreciated.

Did you purchase the caravan from the dealership on the understanding that he would relocate it for you? If so you should go back to the dealership and insist on them sorting out the problem. It could be classed as "mis-selling" if he pockets the money and then renages on the deal.

I quite agree with Ann, go back to the dealer and ask him why its illegal for him to move it? See what he says. If its illegal for him than what chance do you have in moving it. I feel really sorry for you, their might be light at the end of the tunnel. Liz

Probably illegal for the dealer too, because he hasn't got a towcar with a GVW of at least 3.5 tonnes, either. Although I would have thought most dealers would at least have access to a larger truck, if only to pick caravans up from the manufacturer. How did he get the caravan to his premises in the first place if it's illegal for him to move it?

Agree get stroppy with the dealer or failing that definitely try Ray (C)'s idea, e-bay. Last winter I purchased a classic car and didn't relish the thought of driving it from Devizes (Wiltshire) to Northampton. Got a chap on e-bay to go from north of Coventry to Devizes pick the car up and bring it to me, cost

It will have to be moved by low loader or something

it cannot be towed on the road as a trailer for 4 reasons

1. it is a mobile home not a tourer and not designed to be towed, the a frame and chasis are not structualy sound enough,

the A frame and tow ball(detachable on some models are there for manovering only.

2.it's more than 20ft in lenth which is the maximum permitted

by law (unless closecoupled ie: aticulated like a waggon trailer).

3. no brakes? the maximum permitted weight of a unbraked trailer under tow is 750kg (about the same as a (sorry about the pun) 8ft caravan.

4. small wheels there more akin to a wheel barrow and definetly not suitable for towing.

all of which would make it illegal to tow sorry but its going to be expensive undertaking unless of course you can get the dealer to pay
