Identical to me; My Sorrento is a second car and, since new last October have dome 6000 miles only. However, mpg whilst solo is only 26 mpg and when towing (steadt 56 on cruise) I see around 20 mpg. Frankly I think it's awful.

Yes we too have the Senator Oklahoma !

Any thoughts?

John
I think your time will come, John. Let me explain, we have the deisel manual, using a carefull right foot we got about 30mpg solo and about 25 while towing. Figures not disimilar to your own, however we have used the car more than you and its now up to 27k miles. What a difference those miles make, I brimmed the tank one day (it must have a wide filler neck as I added about 10ltr more while brimming)and traveled on 50-60mph roads for over 100 miles, the needle was still on the full mark when I arrived. Then travelled another 110miles, same sort of speeds, then hitched up the caravan for another 100 miles of towing (return journey from Hunstanton) and still had just under half a tank left. Over three hundred miles and still with all that expensive stuff still in the tank, frankly I was amazed and at the same time rather chuffed. True, the roads were not fast, I used 5th gear as soon as I could but I kept up with traffic at all times. Maybe your Sorento just needs more miles on it too. The way I look at it is that I had a Suzuki 2.5 petrol before, and that made me weep where fuel consumption was concerned, the Sorento is now making me smile, keep the faith bud.

Hello John, I would agree with what Lol is saying as the engine loosens up you will hopefully find economy improving. People are actually achieving better mpg figures than myself when you read the threads on the UK Sorento forum and many towing heavier twin axles, but there cars have done more miles than my own. I also cover over 40k miles per year in a company car and quite often find that economy is still improving even with 30/40 thousand miles on the cars.

I agree with Lord B: what does it matter? However, when i first had my Range Rover converted to LPG, I did check it, just to see how far it would go on a tankful of gas. It did 10.2 mpg. Now, LPG is less than half what you lot pay pay for your liquid gold, so buy my reckoning, that gives me over 20mpg. With a car weighing 2300kg and caravan at 1800kg, I'm more than pleased with that. Solo mpg? Not sure, I just fill up with gas when the red light comes on. You don't buy Range Rovers for economy!

Hi Emmerson,

Converting your car to run on LPG just effects the fuel costs, you still do the same mpg, and you still produce the same amount of CO2 as when it ran on gasoline.

Worth while savings in money, certainly, and if the Range Rover pre-dates Euro III - then LPG conversion should be cleaner in other emissions than gasoline.

But the car is still only doing 10 mpg (and not 20) - so you are still emitting over 600 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

With EDF increasing gas prices to homes by 19% and and British Gas by 12.4% how long before motorists gas prices sore in price.

Our greedy failing governement will soon catch on and edge up the price of motorists gas prices I'm sure I'm sad to say.

Hi all

Thought I'd just add a bit

Been towing for 28 years and always find that a heavy foot = poor mpg whatever on the back.

We have Disco TDI 2.5 P reg ES model automatic, towing Senator Wyoming 2006

On the M'way at 55 - 60 we get 20 mpg ish while towing.

Solo at 65mph we get about 24mpg - but either way if we put cruise control or air con or both on we get about 20% drop in mpg.

And around town you may think you need a petrol tanker to keep it topped up, in tow. Even with a very light right foot.

Hi all,

We tow a 2004 Avondale Argente 550-4 7'6" wide and 1400kgs with a 2004 Mercedes ML270 CDI which is chipped to 200bhp and 354lbs/ft to ease the strain, I always drive through the night on long trips and keep on the max speed limit when safe to do so,I get around 22mpg towing and about 29mpg solo but whatever people get with different outfits we all produce less pollution and burn less fossil fuels than a 747 going abroad.

Hi, my turn now. Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD (2004)2135kg towing 2004 Abbey Spectrum 520 1768kg.Travelled to France(just south of Samur) from Co.Durham av 24.2mpg. Return leg only 20.1mpg but that could be due to being full of wine! plus a slight head wind in uk did not help.Wind direction though can make a big diference.Earlier this year we went to Chester and crossing the hilly A66 into a strong headwind we struggled to do more than 14.6mpg for some time but onto the M6 and it ended up at 20.6mpg

1999 3.5 v6 trooper converted to lpg

2004 avondale argente 642 1600kg

not sure of actual mileage but 55litres of lpg will take us between 200-230 miles solo and 130-175 towing, but going on the hilly bits near andorra this year it went down to around 100 miles. as lpg is around half price (or less) than petrol i guess whatever figure i get, could be doubled.

cheers,

.dave

Sorento 5sp auto XS 2148KG

Vanroyce 450EK 1500KG

Solo is about 26-27mpg and towing 22-23mpg.

I have a warning for Skoda Octavia owners, having had several estates Octavia's and I really miss mine, Check the actual weight of your car? The book says 1500kg but on a weigh bridge you may find it is actually only 1400kg.

Long story and nearly car/caravan on their sides, forced me to sell.

2005 Sorento auto diesel 30 solo, 22 towing.

2006 Senator Oklahoma 1500kg

Car carries while towing 2 adults, 2 kids and one ladrador I also have four bikes on the roof.
What a stable tank for towing! Downside is the fuel consumption, I have the XS with climate and cruise and that does drain the tank a bit. but does it dull my smile???

Good stuff for the anoraks to digest here ! OK So what if I am ?

Two points.... those who don't care about the cost, lucky you, but remember we are talking fossil fuels here.

The other is , how do some people get such huge mileages when towing ? I guess you must be the ones bringing vanners into disrepute by clogging the major highways traveling at 40mph.
