'Muck' in toilet flush

Anyone any experience of flaky pieces of 'muck' like stuff in the toilet flush water when used to flush the onboard toilet. Seems to happen whether the reservoir is full or near empty. Only thing I may have done in the past was to inadvertently put green toilet 'stuff' in the water reservoir instead of blue stuff.

It's normally pink liquid that is added to the water. Blue or green are added to the waste tank.

It should not be green or blue in the flush header it should be pink.

We had an older van that used to have the problem - sort of algae like black flakes - we found that it went because we were using the van frequently.

At a guess I would have thought flushing the tank through, using the correct additive and draining when leaving for longer periods should help.

Hi Lawrence - this topic cropped up some time ago and I had a similar problem at that time. The consensus was that it was due to using Thetford pink flush additive. I thoroughly cleaned out the flush tank (pull the pump upwards to get access to the tank) and then use Elsan fluids. No problem since then - John

Morning Rod One - I think we must be talking of different models of Thetford toilets. The one that gave me problems in a previous van had a pump which was simply a push fit into the flush tank, it was not necessary to remove or undo anything else at all - John

Flush out all water use solution of milton it kills algae. use with normal flush fluid.

Thanks to all who have helped here. You all spotted the deliberate mistake in that I said I should have used blue, when, in fact, I meant pink. John, I will try your suggestion, although I can't say that I have seen Elsan products at my caravan dealers. William - you obviously have the correct name for the team that you support in Glasgow!!

Experience is a valuable, i have had this a couple of times over the years, just fill the tank with fresh water, pop in a couple of sterilizing tablets and set off home. At the end of your journey, drain it down and no more algae, never had a problem with the toilet afterwards and i use my caravan 30+ weekends a year.

Hi Lawrence, the others are quite right, the muck used to come from the thetford pink additive, although they won't admit it. I put a solution of bleach, left it for a day, then flushed it out with copious amounts of water. Since then, no problems. Most of the new vans draw water direct from the aquaroll so they must have sussed the problem. Peter

if you see the thetford site it tells you to add MILTON to a tank of water and leave a couple of hours then flush.dont leave too long it will damage any seals on the toilet.

The waste tank seal, the automatic pressure release vent seal and the cap seal must be cleaned regularly. When the toilet is being used frequently, monthly cleaning is generally sufficient.

We advise cleaning the seals and valve blade with Thetford Bathroom Cleaner.

Note! Never use household cleaners (bleach, solvents or other powerful cleaning agents). These may cause permanent damage to the seals and other toilet components.

For cleaning your toilet:

Squirt Thetford Bathroom Cleaner into the toilet bowl.

Flush the bowl with water and wipe down the rest of the toilet with a damp cloth.

Tip! For a really shining toilet, dry it with a soft dry cloth after cleaning.

Thoroughly clean the seals and valve blade, using Thetford Seal Lubricant and wipe them over with a cloth or a piece of toilet paper. Repeat the above operation if the seal and blade are dirty or if opening and closing the blade is difficult.

Note! Never use Vaseline or any vegetable oil. These may cause leakage.

When the toilet is not being used for a long period, it is advisable to clean the seals and then coat them lightly with Thetford Seal Lubricant. This will ensure that they remain in good condition (supple).

N.B. The valve blade seal is a part of the toilet that is subject to wear. Depending on the extent and manner of maintenance, after a certain period the seal will lose quality and must be replaced.

Maintenance tips for the flush-water tank

For thorough cleaning of the flush-water tank of mobile toilets, we recommend our customers use ordinary Milton cleansing fluid.

Dose 50ml of Household bleach (Milton) cleansing fluid per 15 litres of flush water. Add directly into the flush-water tank and fill with clean water. Leave the solution in the tank for 24 - 48 hours, depending on the degree of contamination. Empty the tank by draining or flushing into an empty, clean waste holding tank. Rinse the flush-water and waste holding tanks thoroughly with clean water. Always empty the waste holding tank at a designated location. Do not use together with other products. Depending on the degree of contamination a second treatment may be required.

Note: Incorrect use or dosage could cause damage to seals and the level indicator. In case of doubt, reduce the dosage.
