Mystery leisure battery failure

My '97 Autocruise Starburst has two leisure batteries in the well under the floor which I replaced last season after a flood damaged the originals. Having put the two Elecsol 100 batteries back on for this season to charge, at least one battery has leaked and become useless. The manufacturers have no advice to offer why this may have occured. Is it possible the battery was faulty or is it more likely the charging system? Can the built-in charger "over-cook" the battery? I assume this is prevented by the charger tripping out.
Any thoughts?

Sorry I can't help with your enquiry, but perhaps you can help me.
I have a 2007 Starburst and I need to change the leisue batteries.
Can the Elecsol batteries be laid on their side as the originals are.
David
