Has anyone seen the proposals for the new drink driving regulations due to come into effect from April next year.

Part of it covers caravans, in a nutshell it states that as a caravan is classed as a vehicle for use on the public highway, you are not allowed to be over the drink driving limit whilst in charge of it even on a site.

This is due to the fact that if there was an emergency such as a fire, you would have to move the unit.

So from April next year if you are over the limit on site in your van you can be breathalysed and banned from driving.

Over the top or what

Turning this April Fools gag into a serious question - how would one stand regarding the law with a motor home. If you are in the back of the vehicle ie the caravan section and had a few drinks you could still be technically in charge of the vehicle as you will have the ignition keys either on you or readily accessable? Could be interesting if you were to spend a night layed up in either a lay-bye or the motorway services.

Hi Colin, I think you have raised a very interesting point. When on site hooked up to services, I think you're 100% safe. But, as you say, what if it is a lay by. Hmm.. a bit dodgy if you have had 3 pints and are approached by The gents in blue. What if they ask you to move on? Do you admit to having had enough to have put you over the limit and then run the risk of being drunk in charge of a vehicle, or do you agree to move on and run the risk of being stopped down the road because they had caught a whiff of your breath anyway? Personally, I wouldn't drink unless I was certain that it was ok to stop the whole night. I guess the vast majority of people would think the same. Best wishes, George T.
