She goes to doggy play school one day a week as does our grandsons Visla so it allows her to blast off her energy levels and socialise as our adjacent nature reserve has been closed since October 2022 due to ash dieback. We also use a secure dog exercise field as we train her recall which is better than loosing her for up to 45 minutes on the Downs. I’ve had working dogs pretty well continuously since a kid but this one is very different. 🤣

Ours being a terrier despite training still does not know what recall is. If there is no one around, he does come back, but if he sees someone he is off to say "hello!" and there is no stopping him and he ignores the recall command. He has been for training and is good at most of the other commands.

We have two terriers, now aged 15 and 11, even though they are now grand old ones they both still enjoy hour long walks and can be trusted off lead with good recall, answering straight away to their names or a whistle. This took patience and alot of work but has paid dividends over the years, taking about six months to achieve this level of success. They can be trusted off lead so can use up any excess energy they have and in the past would run along side the mobility scooter even now when Sadie [15] enjoys a lift sitting between my legs until reaching the destination for a run.

I
It’s not a weakness, it is what they are “hardwired” to do, although it must be in a very controlled and disciplined manner. Hunting, flushing and retrieving is what my dogs have always lived for, to say they love it, is a huge understatement. 👍

I know what you mean. My last two went on to nearly 16 years and never really gave up, but just less successful as they got older. They were from gamekeepers stock. They were not trained for working but had no problem catching rabbits. The present one has a penchant for squirrels as well as birds.
