Am looking at a new car for the mag tomorrow to replace our elderly Volvo 850. it's big, rear wheel drive and diesel. And we'll get change from £1000

Good on you, Nigel. I've been using old cars and vans for all my 40-odd years caravanning.Must have saved an absolute fortune over the years, but I don't know what happened to it!
(well, I do really - it went on lots and lots of holidays in those old outfits!)
Btw, my current outfit has a combined age of 52 years, so I do mean old.

My current tow car is a 1996 Toyota Surf 3.0L diesel automatic and does the job just as well as a new 4 x 4. I would hazard a guess at a Merc.

Sadly, it was a snotter. It was an Omega estate but the vendor's warning that it needed 'a little bit of touching up' was optimistic at best. It needed a wing and the whole side resprayed. At least I didn't drive 70 miles to find that out. Oh. Hang on. Yes I did...

There are enough good Omegas not to risk a suspect one, so the search goes on. This was the old six cylinder diesel though and finding those at sensible money is a struggle.

Had one some time ago and solo it was lovely!! gutless for towing though so she had to go. The friends that bought her still have her and have been very very happy with it. Saw it erlier this year and for a ten year old car it ws looking very very good. The inside (it ws an elite) still looks good too

If only - if GM had put the Isuzu 3.0 V6 diesel into the Omega and kept it in production I'm sure it would have sold strongly - instead they produced the long-wheelbase Vectra estate to replace it and put the V6 diesel into that.
I like the Vectra-C estate but the V6 diesel was wasted in it.
