New caravan depreciation

As the title suggests are there any figures for depreciation when buying a new caravan?

I appreciate it will probably vary with regard to layout and model / make etc but i was wondering if there was a ball-park figure.

We are going to change our van and have looked at new and nearly new and we are much undecided as to the pluses and negatives. I would never buy a new car again after a bad experience some years ago tending instead to go for an ex lease or demo vehicle thus saving on that immediate massive depreciation, but caravans present a different angle.

Any advice or observations gratefully received

Difficult to say as it depends on so many different factors. Make of van, layout, size all are factors that vary from season to season. One year fixed beds are all the rage so if you are trading on one, you may get a better deal, the next year it can just as easily be single beds. Some say twin axles are harder to part exchange, others say the opposite. If the manufacturer has for example 'dropped' the model range you have then it may not be as desirable as an identical model that is still in production. Of course if the manufacturer goes bust, then selling the van on may be even harder.

What you could do is look at average forecourt prices of a van similar to yours in age and layout. Take off between 30-40% and that is possibly a ball park price for a trade in. That will vary according to time of year and what you are buying. If you plan to sell privately then a price between trade in and forecourt is probable.

There is a Glass' Guide that lists all vans, but getting your hands on one is not so easy, unless you know someone in the trade.

the first time we tried to sell our fixed bed Sterling Jewel the salesman said people dont want to buy a used mattress,we found a lot better price somewhere else.We lost about 4k over two years but over a few more years it would slow up, a cash sale cos you were leaving caravanning might be a lot different.
