New caravan owner in Leicestershire

Hello all,

My wife and I bought our very first caravan at the end of April 2010. We had our first holiday in it in May when we went to Mundesley and have spent 2 weekends away in Stratford. We seem to be getting on ok so far and are beginning to get ourselves organised. The one thing I am concerned about is levelling the caravan. I have a pair of levellers and as yet have not had to use them. What advice can people give me about the best way of levelling a caravan as I'm sure I will have the need to do it one day.

Thanks very much

David.

Hello David and Welcome to the forum.

There are other forum users with the same name as yourself so to help to distinguish your posts from other members I'd suggest that you log in and alter your forum name to make it unique to yourself via the EDIT PROFILE function.

Congratulations on your first caravan, it's great that you are becoming organised and enjoying your breaks.

Obviously fore and aft levelling is done via the jockey wheel, never use the corner steadies to 'jack up' the caravan or serious damage will be caused.

A Triangular Spirit Level available from caravan accessory shops will be useful when placed on a flat surface such as the front locker near to the window. Otherwise a half full clear plastic bottle of water on a flat surface works just as well.

If you find yourself on a pitch which slopes laterally:

Try to find a part of the pitch with the least amount of slope if possible.

Stop the unit just to the rear of where you want to pitch for a s/a (single axle) caravan.

Place your levelling ramp in front of the wheel which needs to be raised.

Drive slowly forward while your partner monitors the level.

When you stop apply the car and caravan handbrakes.

If necessary apply chocks behind the wheels of the caravan.

Unhitch.

For a t/a caravan place both ramps at the side of the wheels with the bottom of the ramps at the wheel centres.

Reverse back, place the ramps in line with the wheels keeping the relevant distances and follow the procedure as shown.

Seemples!
