Hi all,

Just had new towbar fitted (a towsure) to my car. I asked for an alko ball as van has alko stabiliser. Been assured by mechanic that this is correct ball. When we picked van up from barrons the handover guy looked at brothers brand new towsure bar and ball (shared van) and then swapped the ball for another one. To me, ours looks like the one that he had before it was swapped. It hasn't got paint on like the new one he was given that was then sanded down. Van hitches fine to our towball, do you think we are safe?

Yes you are safe the paint is take off so the pad can grip the tow ball better and when you bay a Alko Stabiliser comes with a Alko tow bar as well.

The alko tow ball has a slightly longer reach than a standard tow ball to enable the Alko stabiliser head free movement.

As previously stated, the black paint should be removed when fitted as it will act as a luricant to the stabiliser thus negating its action. Its only there to keep the ball head from rusting before use. Never put grease or oil etc on the tow ball head, it must be kept dry when using an Alko type stabiliser unit as it works on a friction principle. Clean the tow ball head before use with, I use, Halfords Brake Drum cleaner. A good squirt and wipe with a clean rag is all thats required. You can also clean the stabilisers friction pads with this.
