New Discovery 5 – and more!

To say it stole the limelight is a bit strong? From what i have read about the show there were about 10 cars so it does depend on who's report you read?
Having seen the concept vehicle whist on a F pace preview a few years ago , it did look like a sport with a bit added on yo take the 3rd row of seating. No-one really liked it , seems a lazy design , everyone likes the sport lets just make it a bit longer, don't they say the less overhang the better tow car?

Looks like an Evoque to me, or is that the Discovery Sport, they all look almost the same.
Just a middle class mums school run car, all flash and daft 'sales' gimmicks......... reference the app to fold down the seats to do a skip run, if you are so lazy you need an app to fold the seats down do you really think the owners could be bothered to do the 'hard' gardening themselves, come on LR get real those people will just pay someone to do it for them. Now you are going to see Disco 5s on the skip run just so the owners can justify the daft app.
What a shame cars are stuffed full of, IMO, useless gimmicks, great for the 3 years of the first owner and warranty but a total nightmare to the enthusiasts who will look after these vechicles as they grow older. Even if I could afford one I wouldn't touch one, we bought a 200TDI new in '94 and I regret selling it when 15 years old, it was by far the most reliable car I've ever owned , hardly fitting the reputation these cars had but it's true, and I only sold it when it'd done 170k miles and all serviced at home, and about 50k miles were towing our van all over the UK and Europe.
This Disco 5 preview should make anyone wanting one grab the current run out model, at least it looks purposeful.

The problem is for the majority of Discovery owners its a family car, its not used for load lugging or even towing, so LR have built the vehicle they want and that LR know will sell. I doubt I will be replacing my D3 with one, hopefully if it ever appears the new Defender will be a better replacement for the Discovery.
We were invited to a dealer event with the Disco 5 on Thursday evening. There was a Disco Sport and D4 in the presentation area to get direct comparisons.
It's smaller inside than the D4, particularly at shoulder height in the front. The mid row seats need to be put on the rear base setting to allow our 10yo daughter to sit, which in turn means the rear 2 are only for babies. The fancy optional phone charger cradle doesn't fit the iPhone 6+, which is a bit odd given the phone has been out for years.
The kerb weight of the V6 3.0 diesel is 2320Kg, so it fits the mass of our caravan. I'm unconvinced the new Ingenium 2litre will pull uphill fully loaded as well as the 3 litre. The rear tailgate is now one pice although there is a very expensive 'shelf' option to protect the bumper. The corners of the tailgate when open are sharp and at a height that lots of average height blokes knocked their heads on.
Lots of D4 owners were not impressed as the D5 loses its work horse abilities in place of style.
Lots of gadgets.
Couldn't establish if the full size spare wheel is deleted with the fully electric deployable towbar.
Although its on sale now, they don't start building til March/April.The first dealer allocations have been sold, 80 in the case of that particular dealer. So a bit like caravans, don't expect delivery much before another year.
Have booked a full road test with towing of the caravan. The D4 skips about on a particular stretch of road near us, the Merc doesn't, so will see if the D5 tows as well as the Merc. 😛 😛
The hand built pre production one we saw had a nice light coloured leather interior, on a black with silver shimmer exterior. I prefer light interiors. Not sure about the 21" wheels, but you can get smaller ones.

I accompanied a work colleague to the local Land Rover Dealer today so he could have a look at the new discovery.
If you ordered it now delivery would be April/May, and was keen to promote the clean engine with £230 road tax i said that would make the car tax £450 a year then? He looked a bit baffled and then had a chat with someone else and then said yes, sorry he got a bit confused, but its only for 5 years. 😱hmy:
