Having just put my anorak on the new Freelander is actually to be based upon a "platform" jointly developed with Jaguar, though early prototypes used an adapted Volvo chassis. All parties are within Fords PAG and so Volvo is working with Jaguar on the XC50 which is the Jaguar platform for the new 4x4 crossover model.
Engines are thought to be the Ford 2L Tdci, and Ford 2.7l Tdi and the Volvo 2.8 straight six petrol. So the Rover sourced petrol engines and BMW sourced TD4 will not be used.
Many of the technical advances featured on the new Discovery and Range Rover will be available such as Terrain Response, All Terrain ABS and Dynamic Stability Control.
It does not look like the Land Rover version will have seven seats, but it is thought that the Jaguar crossover version will. No info on the Volvo version.
Such co-operation is not unusual and within the PAG certainly adds value and saves money.
One oddity about the current Freelander is that before BMW owned Land Rover all those years ago, the body for the Freelander was to have been made in Scandinavia by Valmet who make some incredibly impressive Tractors and other REALLY big boys toys.
BMW financed the changes that allowed body production in the UK.
Right - Anorak off - back to work.
