New Nissan Xtrail

I've recently traded my 56 plate 2.2 136 bhp columbia X-trail in for a 58 plate 150bhp 2.0 dci sport (lovely car). we used the new tug to tow for the first time this weekend up the A19 to Old Hartley, WHAT a dissapointment!! The car seemed underpowerd and i was for ever dropping down the box at the slightest hill. I've travelled this route many many times with the old Xtrail without the slightest bother never ever having to change gear it was 6th gear all the way. Any one else experienced this dissapointing lack of performance changing over form the old Xtrail to the new because on paper the new one seems to have the credentials to out perform the old one but my old one beats the pants of this new one!

I thought the same when i moved from a 2004 2.2 134bhp xtrail up to a 2009 171bhp. Even wondered if the 148bhp version had been fitted.

There is now doubt the 2.2 feels more torque low down, than the new 2litre engine.

But the raw performance figures say otherwise. Part of the problem is the new car has higher gearing, and the power delivery is blunted by the continuous emission controls, the particle filter is a case in point.

Then we have the extra 50/100kg weight penalty.

The upshot for me is i tow a lot more in 5th gear, and also solo, 6th gear i find is for high speed cruising.

At my last service i complained to the service manager about this, he told me it was down to the emission controls, and the volvo models they sold were exactly the same.

I would have been happy myself with at lest 2.2cc as i believe that there is no real substitute for engine capacity.

Still on the positive side the new car is deceptively quick in 171bhp guise, and still returns around 40mpg, so the economy has not suffered, also the new engine is very quite, revs like a petrol engine, and after a year in use is so far completely faultless. Well done renault.

Can't fault the mpg of the car, according to the on board computer after towing to and from the site and a little running around the area we still returned 36mpg and the clutch doesnt smell on this car like it did on the old one during on site manouvers. still, think i'll get my dealer to check the car over though just in case there is a problem with it.

We tow a 1500kg caravan and find the 150bhp great after having 3 2.2 models

It is higher geared and so 5th gear needs to be used more but then you have the advantage of lower revs per mph on the motorway when solo

I get 35/36 mpg in mixed mainly 10 mile trips

We've done 26000 miles in 30 months and only needed to have one noisy door lock changed.I have fitted MAD spring assisters to give a more level tow and that has reduced body roll as well

We also changed from the Columbia to the Sport but miss the electric folding mirrors!!!
