Looking at the new (Sept 2005) 2.0 diesel hatch, looks heavy enough for a 'small car' and believe the 140bhp engine a better bet than earlier 1.9 130 bhp? (new 1.9 only 105 bhp)anyone with good reports?

The Skoda Octavia is "just" another variant on the Audi A3, VW Golf/Bora, SEAT Leon/Toledo platform (Chassis, Engine, Transmission, Suspension, Electrics etc).

As a small towcar it's good because of it's weight and engine/transmission but suffers from excessive rear overhang in relation to the short wheelbase. This can cause problems with nose-heavy caravans.

To avoid Audi / VW premium pricing consider the SEAT versions.

Alan, I have owned since May a new Octavia 1.9 105bhp hatchback with which I tow a 2004 Bailey Discovery MTPLM 1156kg, the performance for a small family car is brilliant, I hold nobody up on the m-ways (I do need to use 4th on inclines) and it returns 38-40mpg towing, 55mpg solo. I drove the 2.0 when looking to buy and would have gone for it apart from extra cost and when I worked all the weights out I didn't feel I needed the extra power. Incidentally I towed the same caravan with a 2003 Octavia (old style) 1.9 Tdi 90 bhp estate and was impressed with that too although it's one letdown was noseweight limit of only 60kgs, new one 75kgs. I am currently driving a demo Octavia 2ltr 140hp estate and in my opinion it is a good car and will make a good towcar.

the engine is a willing workhorse and it has an awful lot of go for a car of this size and weight.
