Had the chance to drive my friends new Sorento yesterday. We travelled down to pick his van up from service so he let me drive it solo and then on the way back towing the van which was around 1520Kgs. It was excellent both solo and towing. This was the top of the range Sorento with the auto box, so I was able to get a good comparision with my auto Freelander. Forgetting any price differential between the two cars I wish I had waited and got the Sorento. Its build standard was really excellent. and the engine was brilliant. It seemed much more powerful than the Freelander. The 6 speed auto box was very good when towing on motorways and minor roads. we had to go up a very steep hill and the auto coped very well apart from changing from one gear and then back up but this was mainly due to other traffic which had slowed down. By using the selectronic mode you could hold the gear and it was perfect. I would add this was a long steep and winding hill which was quite a test for any car.
Overall excellent. Outstanding engine; build quality and unique 7 year warranty. Be interesting how it gets on in tow car of the year tests. One point you can't really compare it with the old Sorento which is really a full blown 4x4 where as the new Sorento will appeal to a slightly different customer. I can understand the old Sorento brigade not wanting to change to the new one.
