Hi guys

As you may have seen im about to be the proud owner of a Lunar Quasar just over 5..
we need cover and I would love a new for old policy, but i dont need foreign travel cover because it will never be an option because of my health.probably never out of scotland.
It will also be kept at our home as we are pretty remote, but we have a wheel lock and alko hitch.
we both have full no claims on our cars, but have no no claims built on caravan cover.
We need to keep the quote realistic at one point last night the CC quoted more than our house insurance.

what can you come up with

With new for old be prepared to pay between £300 and £400 per year. Market value is slightly cheaper. Also depends on security arranegements, i.e. storage, clamps, trackers etc.

Hi Surfer
Yep, Caravan guard actually called me while i was logged in on there site because they could tell i was a bit puzzled, that doesnt sound good does it, anyway they said most new for olds are more than house insurance unfortunately, and recommended that I look at a guaranteed value, which i found at the caravan and camping club and I must admit i like the look of.£255, which isnt to bad at least half of a new for old. Like I said in the other post it will never be out the country and not likely far from home, so there were things that we could tweak.
do you know if anyone else that does this type of cover..

yer wee pal lollie

Hello Lollie,

I'm not about to recommend a particular insurer, but a word of advise do check the terms and conditoins very carefully.

You might also try contacting an insurance broker, and ask them to check the "whole market" for a suitable policy, and you might try the insurance companies directly. Some companies may have a more felxible approach to compling a policy individally tailored to a clients needs.

Hi Lollie
Household insurance is a real safe bet for most insurers. It doesn't move, it's postcode sensitive and very easily made secure with decent locks.

A caravan almost begs to be stolen.
The two clubs, CC and C&CC own schemes which are both administered through a Broker probably offer the widest cover , with less restrictions , not the cheapest, but certainly the most flexible at claims time.
Use them as your benchmark and shop around as the Prof says.
But just remember to be absolutely certain you fully understand your chosen Insurers security arrangements, and any special policy terms and conditions. Any deviation from what you agree will result in tears.

Hello again Lollie.
In the 12 years we have been caravanning Ive use 3 insurance companys now I hope I wont get into trouble here with Parksy but two that I have been very pleased with (1) Caravan Wise, who I was with for a few years it was only because I bought twin axle van at that time they wouldnt insure them but now they do.(2) the company we are with now is Tourer Select and these two will tailor you insurance to suite you.
Good Luck once again
Sir Roger

Hi SirRog, Prof, Dusty

Right ive had a wee look around and its a competition now to get it under £250 even just for a market value quote, i did like the CCC guaranteed value it came in at about £253..more or less guaranteed the sums insured.
Ive tried the 2 you supplied sirRog, and CW was best at £227.59
but i have also tried EandL on the vanguard2 policy which includes accidental damage for £197 yearly or £19.71mth

Now I do like the idea of the guaranteed value but also the accidental damage clause at EandL..any more advice with regards these types of insurance or companies, anyone cover or claimed under the vanguard2??

the other thing that keeps coming up about keeping van at home is the, on the driveway, or in garden within boundaries, which one would you think and what is the difference I am presuming that something that isnt on a driveway is secure, we have a double Lshaped driveway, caravan is in side garden pushed off driveway and onto it own grassed area, so im saying within garden well within boundaries.would you agree..
thanks in advance lollie x

You should Google E&L and see if you think saving £50ish is worth it.Like learner drivers new caravanners are probably more likely to have mishaps,we certainly did ,cost £1600 ish which CIS(C0-0p in old money) paid without a murmur and promptly.I have read posts about insurance companies along the lines of:- are you sure you put wheelclamp on Yes Are you sure Yes I think so If you are not sure we are not paying and we have you on tape saying you only think so
Good luck whoever you go with

For someone who paid well over the odds for a pig in a poke I'm surprised you are now appearing to penny pinch on the insurance of your new baby.
Take it from me one of the company's you have mentioned have had some very bad press on here over the years . We are not allowed to name them and indeed poor old Lord Hezza's haymarket were warned off!!

Read what I and Prof John suggested to you. If you value your new baby listen to us. Conversely if it's all about price please carry on but woe betide the day you have a claim.
The small print is key.
Did you know some Insurers actually give bonuses to their staff if they successfully reject a claim?????
Weird one that, but it is true but , no names.

Good luck Lollie but please , please don't burn your fingers again.

Hi Guys

I should have replied to this post last night as i know you are all keen to look out for me and avoid anymore pitfalls.
I knew I had read about some insurance companies "ways" and it didnt take a second with said attached link for my eureka moment.
Of course money is tight just now but like you have all so rightly said this is a new and very precious baby to us.
So it will be more than likely C&CC for us and the guaranteed Value policy,as i think it is the more accurate of the policy's regarding how we use the van but also the initial condition of the van on how the figures all tally up.
Certainly apart from that one there is only the other that SirRog mentioned, that may be in the running for us.

I didnt mean to panic you all like that, can we put it down to sleepiness!! lol

Hi Dusty

well the wee one always wins and he quite rightly has asked to go to the seaside, so we are off to watch the dolphins at Fortrose as of monday I hope! and then further on up the coast to Banff to a little village called Whitehills who have fish and chips like you have never tasted and we aint talking about a typical "chippy" here basically anything they have caught that morning is ready for the lunch time customers. now i was brought up at the coast and loved my fish but i can say had on heart that i have truely never had fish as gorgeous as theirs.
I will post some pics once we are back and give a holiday up date, so here start the happy memories!!
once the vans up the road on Saturday i will, do my pipes with Milton, just in case they arent, well its not like part of a standard service but i can honestly say i wouldnt be surprised if the dealer did do them, as thats the kind of family business it is..
im still a bit nervous excited way, as other things in life are still at odds, so a holiday is in desperate need and being the OH situation its not as if we need rush back, all be it the wee one starts school mid august, so we'll make the most of it.Thats for sure.

wish i could send you all a postcard, for all the love and support you have all so readily offered.

Hi Lollie,
If you haven't already made up your mind on an insurance company, another one that might be worth getting a quote from is NFU. I was insured with them for a number of years, changed to another company because of a better new for old cover at that time. As I said somewhere (another thread I think) I 'm currently with the Caravan Club for insurance. Personally I would recommend either of the two main clubs for insurance, might not be the cheapest, might have to join to get the cover but both appear to have the expertise required and a good reputation.
Hope you enjoy your trip. Like the sound of that fish and chip shop!

Hello Lollie,
I can't stress enough to check the terms and conditions, and please be aware that you can't assume anything will be the same between companies.

There is usually a reason if one company is much cheaper than the rest, and you should dig to find out why, In most cases either the cover is less good, or they have a history of rejecting claims on technicalities thus keeping costs down.
As a general assumption cheaper quotes are probably less cost effective if you ever need to claim.- so I just reinforce that you must check out all the terms and conditions carefully.

The two main caravanning clubs are likely to have put together effective polcies but they wont be the cheapest.

The E & L policy is the £19 spread over 13 payments and not 12 months as they work on Lunar months so be aware!

Hi Surfer
Yeh i noticed that when fishing about, and you should see the "guff" they put into there clauses in choosing between a year or lunar months for the same policy, will DEFF not be going with them at anytime on the future after the "guff" ive read and heard!!
but cheers for that i hope the ones that are with them realise all the small print, bet even dustys head would be throbbing at all the exclusions.
