I used to have a 2003 Avondale Rialto and that had Maxmiler tyres on it. When I sold it in early 2007, there were the first signs of cracks appearing on them. Had I been keeping the van I would have been changing them that season. I don't know how long the tyres had been in existance before they were fitted to the van, but I take 5 years to be the limit now, even with careful storage.

The tyres have date stamps on them. However, even brand new tyres are likely to have been around for up to 6 months before they are actually fitted to wheels. Yes, 5 years is a good guide but they also state that 7 years should be the max, so if the changeover date is somewhere in between then all should be fine. However, as you mention examine the sidewalls and if they do show cracking, it is time to think of changing them whatever the age.
