Newbie after some advice on engine size 2.2 or 2.8

Hi, we are looking at buying our first motorhome. I've finally decided on berth, layout etc,. but as we will be towing a trailer and a race car my husband wants a 2.8 engine. The only problem is that this really reduces my options when looking. Can anyone offer advice on whether a 2.2 would easily tow a trailer and car and pull up hills, as this opens up a lot more options for me. Thanks

Presumably this isn't new vehicle you are looking for ? I have to say that I think your husband is right, the newer 2.3 and 3.0 litre Engines would have the torque that you would need to tow a race car (plus spare tyres etc.,) as would the older 2.8. But the older, and even the newer 2.2 would stuggle even if 'chipped' for higher power.
You have to look at the worst case scenario, pulling up a long hill, and not wanting to be at 'Walking pace'.
The 2.8 is an excellent engine, and quite a few manufacturers offered them as option upgrades, just need to find one.

I am new to this game too and thought I would be able to tow almost any weight of small car with my hobby 750elc, tag axle, 4500kgs 3.00litre fiat, ducato chassis motorhome but reading the manufacturers handbook online I now find I am limited to 1550kgs. Very few cars above the smallest size combined with the weight of the trailer fall under that weight so you need to know the towing capacity of your prospective motorhome if you are towing a race car? Just a thought.

My Autotrail has a Maxi Chassis and a load of 4250kg, BUT only a 1060kg max tow limit, this is because it has a large overhang at the rear,with chassis extensions. The towbar was VERY expensive as it included a lot of chassis strengthening, SO, no trailer... I do however tow my 1040kg Car behind my van on my 20kg Car-A-Tow A-Frame, and have done for over a year now, I can recommend it. BUT not for the Continent. and I don't even try to take it over. Great to have our car with us.
