Newbie Question - Towing with Honda CR-V 2006

Hi all,

I am going to buying my first caravan soon and am trying to get my head around towing weights. Below are the details of my car but what I want to know is what would be the MAX laden caravan weight I should be looking at?

Once I know what the max is I should be OK from there I hope lol
Please note I am dyslexic and really struggle with percentages and numbers so the more simple the answers the better.

My car details are:
Honda CR-V (2006) 2.2 I-CDTi SE 5d

The details I found for weights are:
Kerb weight: 1631 kg's
Un-braked Manufacturers towing capacity: 600 kg's
Braked Manufacturers towing capacity: 1500 kg's

75% of Kerb weight: 1223.25 kgs
85% of Kerb weight: 1386.35 kgs
95% of Kerb weight: 1549.45 kgs

I get confused over all these numbers so which ones should i be looking at and what max laden weight caravan should I look for?

Any help would be great thanks.

The over riding factor is that the car's maximum tow weight is not exceeded. This is the difference between the first two numbers on the weight plate located on the door pillar or engine bay. This max tow weight is ideally for a low sided trailer not effected by side winds. Hence the recommendation for high sided trailers (eg caravans) that the max trailer weight is no more than 85% of kerb weight for novice towers and no more than 100% for experienced towers. The 85% or 100% has to, of course, be lower than or equal to the max weight calculated from the weight plate.

So just to confirm, any Laden Caravan UNDER that weight I should be OK to tow?

You will be legal to tow, but whether it is OK or not depends on how you load the van and the conditions you are driving in. The max weight of the van is termed MPTLM. You also need to check that the gross train weight (MAM of car + MTPLM of van) is less than 3,500 kg if your driving license is only B rather than B+E.

OK thank you, I will double check the numbers.

I understand about loading, I used to load and tow trailers and was a van driver so that wont be a problem and my licence is B+E as I passed my test over 30yrs ago... showing my age now lol

OK I have checked the numbers on the car's weight plate and the manual.

Car's weight plate has 4 weights in this order
2140kg
3640kg
1-1090kg
2-1070kg

In the manual it states:
The EU Kerb weight is: 1502 to 1555

Now I am confused even more lol
So based on these numbers directly from the plate and the manual I am back to the same question.
What would be the MAX laden caravan weight I should be looking at?

The 4 weights are:

2140kg - Gross vehicle weight, the Maximum Allowable Mass (MAM)
of the vehicle including occupants, fuel and payload.

3640kg - Gross train weight, the combined maximum allowable
mass of the vehicle and trailer.

1090kg & 1070kg - Maximum axle loads front and rear respectively.

The difference between the first 2 numbers is maximum trailer weight, ie 1500kg, which confirms your first posting.

Please now look at your vehicle V5c certificate and look for 'Mass in Service' or 'Mass in Running Order' as this approximates to Kerb Weight and should be between the figures you give as 1502 to 1555. Please let us know the figure from which we can advise a max caravan weight.

Hi,

I have looked at V5c certificate and it only has the writing for 'Mass in Service' and it has no figures by it at all so not sure what to do now or how to get the Mass in service figure. Any idea where I go from here?

Msattitude, if you check the info below, you will see that your original figures of 1386 kg for a fully laden caravan, would be the best for an 85% ratio. Legally you could tow 1500 kg but you would be pushing the boundrys of the car and in my opinium saftey. So see how much weight in payload you will carry in the van, ie, tables chairs, water barrel, etc take that away from the 1386 kg and look for a caravan around that weight, maybe a max of 1200 kg. I hope that makes sense.

The figure for MTPLM INCLUDES tables, chairs, etc, so msattitude should look for a van with MTPLM of 1321kg (85% of 1555kg from her last posting), not the 1200 kg you are suggesting.

WC, I think we are going to the same place but in different ways, and will confuse MSA. I am suggesting Mtplm weight at 85% is 1386kg so give internal weight say 186 kg a 1200 kg MAM caravan empty. Would be good. Tow limit max is 1500 kg.
Or have I got all mixed up,

You have made it very clear for me as to what to look for now, where I know I will be legal and safe with the right weights.

WC, another note I have used the car weight of 1631 MAW, from Parkes.co.uk this gives 85% of 1386 mtplm.

Hutch, Forget the 'internal weight' as legislation, etc goes by the van's max weight ie MTPLM (Maximum Technical Permissible Laden Weight). The lady's V5c doesn't give the car MIRO so she has to go by the handbook NOT a third-party matching service and the handbook says [strike]MAM[/strike] kerb weight up to 1555 kg, so use the recommendation of 85% of that figure, ie 1321 kg max for van MTPLM. I agree, the max towing weight for the car may be 1500 kg, but for stability's sake that would be for low-sided trailers and not high-sided trailers as caravans are.

Hi again,

So I have been looking at a Caravan and the details I found online state the following (owner does not know the weights)

Mass in Running Order weight: 1009 kgs or 19.8614227786 cwt / hundred weight
Maximum allowable weight is: 1300 kgs or 25.5895437188 cwt / hundred weight

The kerbweight of the towing car needs to be at least 1529.41176471kgs to achieve an 85% match,
to achieve a 95% match the tow car would need to be at least 1368.42105263 kgs.

Would this be too heavy for my car?

We never ,managed to get the exact kerb weight for my car as the numbers we had were 1502 to 1555 and there was nothing on the V5c certificate!

I am hoping to go see this tomorrow but it depends on what your advice is so any help would be great again thanks.

i too have a Honda CRV 2.2ctdi and ive towed a Sprite Major 6TD and that was 78% match.
