Hi I don't want to confuse matters further, but the 85% figure is just guidance it has no legal standing, and it offers no guarantee the car and caravan will tow nicely, but in most cases it does. 85% is a very precise figure, but in reality a few +/- percent either is unlikely to make a massive difference.
If you transgress the "85%" it's not likely to suddenly turn round and bite you, after all the general consensus is that as you become more familiar with towing you can consider increasing the ratio towards 100% However you must always observe the maximum towed weight limit of the vehicle which is a legal limit.
As with any dynamic device, you have to be aware of its handling and if it starts to concern you then initially slow down, and when convenient stop and adjust the loading observing the general guides on keeping large weights low down and as close to the axle as possible.
Just take things carefully, no car and caravan will perform as well as the solo car so just give yourselves time and space, and hopefully you will soon learn your outfits foibles and manage them safely
