Thanks to my hand held LED 13 pin circuit tester I found that the supply to the caravan fridge on my new Sportage was not switching off when I switched the engine off. No problem folks, this is a new system. This Universal kit (AC09236050) is designed to be self switching at the pre-set voltage of approx 12,7 volts. So, when you switch the engine off the supply to the fridge remains alive until the towcar battery voltage drops to approx 12,7 volts. However I have found that I can force the supply to disconnect by briefly switching the Ign On then OFF again. This kit was supplied and fitted by my local KIA dealer

Jeff, maybe this is a problem with the Kia/ Hyundai, wiring, on my Sante Fe, 2014, I found they had not fitted the Extra earth so the Atc would not work and also they had wired the permanant live and the fridge / charging live, the wrong way round, the wiring codes are mostly wrong.
I paid for dedicated Hyundai wiring but, not sure about that. There are also two fuses under the bonnet that supply the harness if you have a problem. Right hand side back of the battery.
Good luck.
Hutch.

I questioned this very factor with my towbar engineer. It's a normal design feature that cuts the current some seconds after switch off. Why?
No.idea but not abnormal.

Hi Hutch. After 32 years caravanning i had got used to the supply to the fridge disconnecting as soon as the engine was switched off. So, i was more than a little concerned when this present system failed to do that. Whatever was wrong with the old system ???

Jeff, when I get a moment I shall get out my multi meter and see if the fridge live carrys on being "live" after I turn off the ignition. Just looked at a couple of testers On "A" might but one about £20. German make.

Whether Kia or any other fridge/split charge relay, its purpose is to protect the cars battery. So when you switch on, the relay doesn't kick in until the car is actually started and a given voltage is reached. Some relays have an adjustment pot on them. When you switch off the fridge will cause a voltage drop which is sensed by the relay which then cuts the power to the fridge, protecting the car battery from going flat

Having had a relay fail and then a flat battery I've studied the current system- (no pun intended).. I drove from Kent to Oxford without knowing the relay had failed. (The repeater still worked.) After having it replaced I had a flat battery so got investigating. (The flat battery was we think caused by me not locking the car and the keyless system ran it down.) Apparently there is one live wire from the battery and then sensor wires from the lights etc. When the relay senses a change, say lights coming on, the relay switches power to the appropriate pin. When the ignition goes off it takes the relay time to recognise this and switch off the fridge feed. Usually takes about 30 seconds.
