Nighthawk M1 Issues

Hi forumistas! Apologies in advance, but this is going to be a long one 😳

I’ve only just joined the forum having been an avid camper for many years with the family and having recently bought a lovely caravan.

I did a bit of research in mobile routers and the Netgear Nighthawk M1 hit much of my desirables from price point, to simplicity of use and finally to reliability. I set the system up with the caravan plonked on our drive and got it working through the caravan’s fitted aerial. I had to buy a few fittings and signal detector and all was well until going on site yesterday. So put my mobile’s ee SIM card into the nighthawk which has an unlimited data allowance. Went through all the protocols, pointed the aerial towards the strongest signal, full bar 4G showing on the router. Router to TV connection is an RJ45 and shows 1 device (TV) connected on the router. All was good….

But for the life of me I cannot connect up to the internet even though the network settings shows that I am connected on both the TV network settings and on the Nighthawk. I’ve even phoned ee to see if it was anything blocking on their end but everything seems to be ok. When I put the SIM back in the phone, all was well again. I’ve logged on to the Netgear website to select ee as a carrier and gone through the setting but still no joy.

Any help would be very much appreciated 😫🙏🏻

You are likely missing the apn config file. Look in your phone or on the EE site to tell you how to build the apn file which is just text.

Just checked that out. That gets set up in the admin panel. The APN section in the software has a drop down and then you select your carrier which in my case is ee.

No it didn’t yesterday when I went into the ANP settings and selected ee as the carrier. I’ll give it another go today, but not really hopeful. I thought it was the antenna with too much signal noise and interference but the signal on the nighthawk was full, was even getting a 5G option. The signal detector was showing 4 out of 4 lights. It’s all just very puzzling.

It usually is a poor 4G signal for me in the caravan. Wasn’t a problem when camping but I want a better solution when in the caravan.

Would you be so critical of those who after a day out in the evening settle down in the awning with a glass of wine and a book? Why so anti TV?

We have 3 wireless Hub at home. Just unplug and take away in caravan. Exactly used same as when at home with no extra cost whatsoever . When we were on BT at home used a TP Link with sim. After ditching BT found 3 to be far more cost effective saving £360+ a years

TV is a lot of rubbish, when I go with the van I never look at it. The other half will sit and watch soaps and that's my cue to get out for a walk with the dog 🐕 you have all winter to watch a goggle box, life is too short, enjoy the outdoors. Each to their own, marmite, black /white, chalk/cheese etc.

I run a 3 hub at home but it has to stay there when we are away as I like to have access to various house systems when I'm away. I also use a second one in the van. Cost is exorbitant at £7.50 for unlimited 3 data. Speed is about 200mbps so plenty fast enough for my uses.

How does that work? I’m on BT and must have about three old hubs in the attic.

How do you set it up in the van?

So you don’t have a wired connection coming into your home then? With our home setup it comes from the pole outside, into the house, into the white router then cable into the home hub.

The Router Hub has two paddles on the back of it which is the Aerial, Stands on window sill top of the stairs at home and in front window of caravan when away.

Six years ago when we moved in here there was no fibre broadband in the road and only an old aluminium cable phone line to the house. I moved the portable WiFi from the boat where we lived before into the house. There is no reason to change even though there is now fibre broadband available, especially as none of the providers will even get close to the price I am paying.
I managed without a landline on the boat just no reason to change now.

We have friends that if they don't have WiFi or phone signal, they go ballistic, they ask us why we are so calm when we don't have a link to the phone.

It's then annoying when we get into signal range, and her phone is bleeping from, all the different social media stuff.
